Been absent today, and didn't follow the above link but young mulberry tend to have mittened leaves and as the mature they take on the same jagged heart shape as a bass tree/linden.
Personally I've had mulberrys that made chills run thru you they are so good!
There used to be a tree, it was deemed illegal, and removed
in downtown Lexington, right on the corner of a fenced yard, it over hung along the side walk, it was big, old and healthy!
On good years, the berries were as long as a mans pointer finger and as thick too!
Like eating hot dogs I tell ya!
3 and 4 bites a berry, and when you got lucky enough to get that perfect, almost black, ever so fragile berry...
It was like all the best flavor a of every berries you'd ever tried!
I've never seen another tree like it but every now and then I get a berry as big as the last joint of my thumb that's got almost as good a flavor.
If you can't tell, that was a while ago and a very fond memory for me.
Here there's no doubt, there's a bumper crop of mulberries and they'll be good! I snitched a few off an early bush I know and the ripe one was great...
I've heard 3 independent comments from local friends about the mulberries this year!
