hey Shadey, i am using a stacking system (http://www.vermitek.com/vermih...). i am not in a hurry to take out any castings - - I just want to understand what the appearance should be before adding the next tray. Then it dawned on me (after i posted my msg) that it will eventually be a simple matter of space. The tray will have too much in it and will cause the bottom to compact too tightly as I understand it. So rather than looking for a consistency prior to adding the next tray, apparently I should simply look at how full the tray is. If I'm not mistaken I've read people suggesting 3/4 full is about when they move on to a new tray.

This all leads me to another question though. Is the standard practice to sift/screen the tray contents or to simply use it as is? My guess would be that the bedding material would contain plenty useful microbes by that point anyway . . . so why waste it, right?

thanks!
