We had them bad last year. Nothing I used worked, I tried most everything from commercial repellents to folklore. Trapping is tricky and takes time and experience, I don't have the patience to use them. I had some result using a castor-oil based lawn spread. It's water-activated, and even though I gave it a good drink with the sprinkler, I didn't notice any real difference until after it got a good soaking with 1 or 2 days of Northwest rain.

Moles are carnivores and eat mainly earthworms and other grubs. They don't mean to kill plants, but when they tunnel around the roots they can indirectly damage or kill the plants.

Voles, on the other hand, go directly for the plant roots.
