I've heard the term used ...as in, "When this iris has pups, you can have one !". As Mary Ann said, it will be ready to "separate " much later...probably next year. It might....and probably would...survive if separated now, and "babied" a little, but it's chances "increase" as the 'increase" gets larger, and develops it's own , viable root system.
