Hi Larry,..you are right they seldom resemble the parent plant,..in my case it was a cross between two roses,..both protected from bees or the like from cross pollinating then waiting for the rose to seed,..placing the seeds on kitchen towel in the fridge for weeks until the seeds showed signs of seedlings,..sterilizing the towel of course and placing it in a plastic bag,..a very long process from start to finish.

Hard to believe but some years back during spring i happened to spot a rose bud/hip that had dropped to the ground and protruding from it was a small seedling,..i wasn't sure if it was a rose seedling or something else like a weed that attached itself to it,..lo and behold i got a rose bush from this,..i still look out for the same thing to happen but no luck.

Back in 2011.
