I don't know if they actually keep animals away, but marigolds definitely co-exist nicely with tomatoes and most other plants!

Wes, do the rabbits get your lettuce even when it's in pots? I grow mine in flower boxes that kind of "straddle" the 2x4 top of my garden fence and it does great, no slugs, no rabbits, no worries Smiling
