Hi SarasotaPatty, Welcome! to All Things Plants!

Watch for these thorny protuberances and then the emerging buds and once you see buds forming, keep an eye out after dark for the flowers because the Ric Rac is a nocturnal bloomer. Some years my plant seems to have the buds for three months before they start to get fat in preparation for opening. The blooms usually begin to open around ten o'clock at night and sometimes they will still be open until 9:00 or so the next morning but they fade/wilt quickly the morning after the blooms open.
