Thank you Jean, I can use all the information I can get.
I tried hostas about 8 years ago. I thought they didn't make it through the winter, until Kevin Vaughn told me that the slugs were probably getting them as the started poking through the soil.
So last fall I started putting slug bait down once a month through the winter on through the spring, the one safe for children and pets. I have hostas that were planted many years ago that are beautiful this year. Evidently the slugs did not get the roots. I can't tell you how happy I was to see these grow.
