They will do quite nicely in a pot, but you may need to give the pot some winter protection in your area. I'm in a similar zone and even in very large containers, I have lost every clematis planted above ground over our winters. I have overwintered small ones in pots on my back porch successfully, to plant out in the spring.
Confidence is that feeling you have right before you do something really stupid.
