When planting with logs over the roots of desirable trees, you might try this method.

If tree root suffocation isn't an issue, these really deep beds work very well.

For the bed shown previously, I just left out the log separators in the lily area. By doing that, I'll still be able to dig and separate as necessary.

It's a really fun and rewarding process. I can say with quite a bit of confidence that I'll never plant directly into this ground again! Even my water-lovers get planting pockets now. Smiling
