Reid, I totally agree with the above replies...
It really is fun to have a shared interest like gardening (or, I imagine it would be... DH is there for me when it comes to the heavy lifting, serious digging, and bean picking, but he isn't really that interested in gardening per se -- other than eating the stuff, of course!) -- but most of the people I know pretty much think I'm nuts with all my gardening projects so apparently there are a lot of people that just aren't "feelin' it"
I know DH would love me to be more interested in golfing... and I did give it a shot, but golfing tends to be done in the same kind of weather (non-rainy) as gardening, so eventually I just quit altogether and he now happily golfs with his group of guys while I happy plant and dig and pick. My ex-husband really wanted me to be interested in fly fishing for trout... but for some reason wasn't thrilled by the fact that I had more fun poking around in the streams and rivers and identifying the larvae, bugs, frogs and plants than I did actually catching fish.
Has your wife ever said anything to the effect of "I wish I knew more about gardening" ? If not, you can always just come right out and ask if she'd be interested in it, but try to keep in mind that it just isn't something that appeals to everyone. A good friend of mine, who loves to cook and can, once told me that she can't stand "dirt," so she doesn't grow her own tomatoes and peppers to make salsa.
There's just no explaining it!
