My friend who owns the plant and is also trying to look for the name thought it could be a rubber plant. But I am not so sure. Leaves are pretty thick and leathery. It is similar in texture to the rubber plant (except the color is a deep jade green) but the stem I don't think looks anything like any of the images I have seen for a Ficus elastica.
