The stolonifera types prefer some shade and moisture, whereas subulata types prefer sun and dry/well drained conditions- probably why the one died. I have found P.subulata easy to propagate too. It creeps over the sidewalk and needs to be trimmed back, and usually there are some roots present. I just plant them trimmings and keep them moist for a while and most survive just fine.
