One comment about "fertilizers"......chemical OR natural......when you see those numbers ' 10-10-10', or whatever, what that's telling you is, in 100 pounds of fertilizer, there is 10 pounds of nitrogen, 10 pounds of phosphate, and 10 pounds of potash. So, if all you can buy ,locally, is , say , 20-20-20.....just use half as much ! What you are looking for is "how many pounds of nitrogen PER ACRE (or square foot, whatever scale of measurement you're using) do I need". And you have to remember that many of the things we add to the soil have a "fertilizer value"....alfalfa, corn gluten meal, and even some grub controls.....so, they need to be included in your "math calculations". But WHATEVER you add, whether it's compost, or chemical fertilizers, or lime, or Epsom salts.....please test your soil first ! If you don't know what it's 'lacking", there is NO way to add what you need, with any certainty !
