I think that the addiction to daylilies is similar to gambling addiction. You wake up in the morning, head out to the garden, and what you see is new and unpredictable. If it beautiful it is extremely reinforcing. So, you do whatever you can to increase the reward.
It is the transient nature of the reward that is addicting. If it looked the same everyday it would not be as reinforcing.
Luckily for us addicts, most of what we do is healthy for our bodies, emotions, and minds.
