That is interesting. I sometimes think that seed raised seedlings do better because they were "raised" in my climate and adjusted better. Whereas new daylily plants often come from a different zone, climate, growing conditions, etc. and go into transplant shock and sometimes even pout for a few years until they either get over it or die. Most of mine have done well, but the dormants rarely do well. So my issue is not named and registered daylilies, it's cold hardy dormant daylilies. They probably don't get enough dormancy here to do well in my garden/yard.
Also, maybe your pasture field is better fertilized by the farm animals than the garden area nearest the house?
