The process you described is exactly what I do with my containers. To me it makes sense since the goal is to fill containers with plants. So when a container planting "dissolves" , the surviving plants go into another container that could use the extra plants and the empty container becomes the next one to fill with more plants. It's part of the evolution of container planting as I see it...
So I think you DO know what you're doing!!
