I live in Quincy, FL (north near the GA line about 30 miles NW of Tallahassee) and bought Palace Garden Beauty about 8 years ago. I planted it (and a bunch of others) in a rototilled garden made of pine chips, aged mushroom compost and the local topsoil. I put down a thick layer of newspaper between the plants and covered with more pine mulch. There are 3 oak trees anchoring the 2 ends and the middle of the kidney shaped bed (about 12x30). We had cut up the limbs so the daylilies got sunlight until about 11am and then again from 3:30 til sundown in the afternoon. Almost all of the daylilies thrived in this environment. Wait Until Dark, All American Baby, Jerry Nettles, Aesthetic Ballet, and a couple of others didn't really thrive there. Palace Garden Beauty did marvelously, I had put in 3 med fans and in 2 years had 15 thick fans or so. My mother-in-law loved that one so I divided it. Bad move on my part-my half dwindled away. I think I still have 2 small fans. The color was the very bluish lavender that you see on the sites trying to sell PGB. It was lovely and I hope that I can encourage the growth that was so spectacular a few years ago.
My oak trees have grown quite a bit and I am in the process of relocating the remaining daylilies to a more sunlit garden. After reading some of the posts here, I have realized the 3 oaks are probably starving my poor daylilies.
Live and learn. The foliage was nice and I had no rust on any of my daylilies. I did get them from mid California where I don't think it is much of an issue.
I'll be using the old daylily bed for some shade loving plants - my hostas near our camper are growing and all came back after last winter. I'll find something else to put with them there and if any one has any suggestions, I'm all ears.
