I love cannas, and yes they really do add a tropical look. Most of mine are NOID though I have 3 tropicana. I have ~ 6 that I leave in the ground as long as they are 10 " or less from the foundation of the house. They are on West side with sun from noon or so til sun down. > 10 " I dig and store and tend to lose 1 or so each winter.

Next year I am gonna increase my tropical bed by ~ 100 sq ft. This year it is ~ 50 + sq feet and is way too packed. Includes hardy banana, hardy kiwi, bird of paradise, 2 huge elephant ears and 10 cannas. Packed fer sure. Near the area I have 5 hardy passion flowers and cypress vine. Next year I will also add snail vine and dutchmans pipe.

I will also add some more cannas and a palm next year.

Only probs with bugs this year were leaf cutter caterpillers and grass hoppers.

I am also growing some giant cana (10 + feet) from seed.
