Mayo - Thank you! I actually DO know how to make a vertical daylily garden, but because I am not using wood anymore, it would not work. But there are other ways to build one. I may eventually have to create one.
Vickie - Thank you. And yes, you are correct that the keyhole shape was designed so that I can get to the daylilies in the middle of the bed (without stepping into the bed) to care for them and also for pollinating blooms.
The reddish-brown paint is to honor my original gardening plan of attracting hummingbirds. Which I still do grow plants for them and the butterflies. And it works! I had a hummer perching very near all day long as I worked in the backyard. He would fly from my rose arbor to the Cassia tree observing what I was doing! (He probably thought I was nuts!
