Paul, I pot them up through the summer months because it's so blasted hot here and our sunlight is so intense. I don't know if you can tell by the first photo, but I have two umbrellas over those two tables, so they're pretty shaded for most of the day. They do get some sunlight as the sun moves across the sky because the umbrellas aren't large enough to cover the entire plywood tables. I plant my rhizomes about half-way or a little more into the soil, and by the time I get around to planting them in the ground in Sept-Oct they should have rooted already. I do knock off most of the potting soil and then spread the fresh roots over the soil when I plant them in the ground. I realize that in other parts of the country people plant very little of the rhizome into the soil, but in our Bakersfield heat I've found that this is what works best for me. When I planted them too shallowly they didn't root so well or so deeply for me. Hope this helps.
And I just received my Superstition order by FedEx a little while ago -- WOW, lots of rhizomes to get potted up, plus hand watering in the garden, plus I think I may have one or two more iris orders arriving tomorrow and/or Friday -- plus one huge daylily order from Maryott's by probably tomorrow -- help me -- I can't keep up! Oh heck, yes I can!!!
