I like them as a focal point in the middle of a group of mixed colors. It makes the vibrant colors pop.

Another use: I have a lot of red and white mixed color iris this year (Bruneau Jasper, Thundering Ovation, etc.) so throwing red selfs and white selfs into the mix allows the different red & white mixes to be planted near each other without all looking too samey samey.
