You forgot to mention the threat of squash vine borer, which maybe the Anasazi didn't have to deal with.. Several varieties are resistant, including Pennsylvania Dutch Crookneck. This is one of my favorites, needs lots of room and does well tied to 6' tall bamboo teepee.
