I have had nothing but problems getting thymes to grow for me. The photo on the left is from 2014 with about 5-6 different varieities of thyme planted below a scratch-n-dent Japanese maple. None of them lasted lthrived - wooley, pink chintz, EB Someone, white, I forget what else. They tend to die out in the middle with sparse new growth along the edges. In this particular bed, I've given up on thyme and replanted with rupturewort, which filled in very nicely in one season from three 4" pots (picture on right). I'm hoping this will be hardier, and the look is similar. I call this part of my herbs the Buddha circle even though I have yet to find a Buddha statue that I like...still searching.
