Well, some certainly do head south. Then, they "repopulate" in the spring as they move north. I know one year I was up at Grandma's in WV in April and saw a Variegated Fritillary. I was just super excited because even though they live in FL, too, I hardly ever see them. When I sent it to BAMONA they said it was a very early record for that area but they still believed it had moved northward and had not spent the winter there. I felt pretty proud of myself. I hadn't thought about the fact that it was pretty early in the year up there. By mid-April it's a party down here in FL!
