@purpleinopp, the first picture is not of a C. esculenta. Colocasia esculenta is the scientific name for the culinary taro, but there are many varieties.
And to make things even more confusing, I found this in the ATP Alocasia data base: "Elephant's Ear (Caladium praetermissum 'Hilo Beauty')."
@ardesia, you're right, Caladiums are also referred to as EE's.
From Wikipedia: Caladium /kəˈleɪdiəm/[2] is a genus of flowering plants in the family Araceae. They are often known by the common name elephant ear (which they share with the closely related genera Alocasia, Colocasia, and Xanthosoma).
