Earlier when I said, That's it! ...I was referring to taro. Sorry for the confusion, and I agree @purpleinopp, the first picture is not of a C. esculenta. Colocasia esculenta is the scientific name for the culinary taro, but there are many varieties.

And to make things even more confusing, I found this in the ATP Alocasia data base: "Elephant's Ear (Caladium praetermissum 'Hilo Beauty')."

@ardesia, you're right, Caladiums are also referred to as EE's.
From Wikipedia: Caladium /kəˈleɪdiəm/[2] is a genus of flowering plants in the family Araceae. They are often known by the common name elephant ear (which they share with the closely related genera Alocasia, Colocasia, and Xanthosoma).

So @piksihk, me thinks your Caladium survived, but changed its characteristics somewhat?
