Castor Bean (Ricinus communis 'Carmencita') |
Have Tender Perennials Trees & Shrubs Sow Indoors Under Lights Sown 2023 |
DND's All Seeds Swap #9 (2022) - nofonan - The Castor Oil plant is a deer resistant tropical foliage plant. It is grown from seed annually, easily reaching 5-6 feet plus in one season. Gibsonii produces a tall and dramatic plant with huge dark red leaves and stunning scarlet seed heads. BEWARE: the seeds and the whole plant is poisonous! Castor Bean seeds can be started indoors 6 - 8 weeks before the last frost date or directly outdoors after the frost season has passed. It is recommended to soak the Ricinus seeds for 24 hours in water to help break the seed coat. Cover the seed with 1/4 inch of soil and keep moist. Grow the plant in full sun and in soil that is rich and has been amended with organic matter. Castor is indigenous to the southeastern Mediterranean Basin, Eastern Africa, and India, but is widespread throughout tropical regions (and widely grown elsewhere as an ornamental plant). Castor seed is the source of castor oil, which has a wide variety of uses. Hardiness: 8 – 12. |
