I am guessing that they are A. moschatus. They do not produce edible pods like okra. Native to Asia and Australia. Musk mallow is cultivated for its seeds, which are used in perfumes as a replacement for musk, and is a source of essential oil that is used in traditional medicine and to flavor foods. The plant also yields a fiber used locally for clarifying sugar, and the young leaves and fruits are eaten as vegetables. Hardiness Zones 3a-8b. Days to Harvest: 60 days. |

The plant is cultivated in northern China for its fiber and is widely naturalized in warmer regions of North America, where it is often a serious agricultural weed.
