Obtained seed from Jan. 2022 seed swap. New to me in 2022.
Goatsbeard plants like part shade, moisture and need shelter from the hot afternoon sun. In the northern range of their hardiness, they can take full sun; however, they will require consistently moist soil and will likely burn during any sort of drought.

Spent flower stalks can be left on the plants through the winter for visual interest, but should be cut back before new foliage emerges.
February 1, 2022: Seeds sown (Winter sown. Needs light to germinate. Protect from afternoon sun. )
May 28, 2022: Plant Ended (Removed, Died, Discarded, etc) (Did not germinate. Will try again using Swallowtail or other similar purchased seed. This seed was from a seed swap and may not have been viable.)

I've had good success amending the soil with gravel (grit, if I can find it) and sand. It really helps. NO fertilizer, to reflect lavender's ability to grow will in the dry, poor soils of its native Mediterranean climate. There can be loss of plants after a severe winter or a damp, humid summer.

SIZE: Mature Size 2–3 ft. tall, 2–4 ft. wide Hardy Lavender can double in size each year for first 3 years. It continues growing, then at a slower pace until age five. They are considered full-grown after three years. NOTE Toxicity: Lavender can be toxic to pets like dogs and cats.

Sun Exposure Full sun
Soil Type Dry, well-draining

January 22, 2023: Seeds sown (Planted in WS jug with other Delphinium, 1/2 and 1/2. Listed as "True Lavender" on Ferry Morse seed packet.)

May 16, 2023: Transplanted (Planted in the front yard mailbox garden. A favorite *annual* from two years ago. Growing again because it is such a lovely, pretty grass that may look lovely in cut flower arrangements. Research it though as I read that the seed heads are fragile and easily shatter, yet it makes a nice dried seed head.)

Third year growing this annual. Dollar Seed seed for 2022. Short-lived plant. Plant these again for the fall. ALSO: when they resow, you'll have blooms through fall.

Sow when the soil temperature is 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The plant thrives in temperatures between 65 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit.

Fertilizer: Add a general-purpose fertilizer to the soil when planting Nigella damascena, and then fertilize it once a month afterward.

Don't need to cover the seeds with soil, but DO pressed down slightly. Kept soil moist. 2-3 weeks to germinate. Does fine WSown. Best sows in a sunny location. Thin seedlings so they're spaced 2 to 9 inches apart.
March 5, 2022: Seeds sown (WS in a jug. )
April 13, 2022: Seeds germinated (Excellent for winter sowing and will self seed in future years. Gather seed pods to ensure new sprouts for each year)
June 15, 2022: Bloomed (See collage photo for blooms of blue and white. Feathery and lovely in a mixed border.)
March 25, 2024: Seeds sown (Planted at Johnson Project Grow)
