Does not seem to have the yellowish tint here in Indiana in my garden at least. Soil, maybe? Introduced by Rockytop Gardens.

Native and widespread in the Pacific NW, from Alaska to California. Grows along the roadsides. Very showy in bloom, and I also enjoy its fall cobwebby look. Indigenous uses: stem fibers for cordage, seed fluff in weaving and padding, leaves as a potherb (rich in Vitamin C). The flowers produce ample nectar which makes an excellent honey.

A hybrid introduced in 1975 by Takii and a AAS winner. It is a main season plant that may suffer from early heat when our temps arrive early. This year we have a cool damp spring, so it it is doing nicely. I prefer earlier heading varieties for spring planting and they are more bulletproof in this area. Nice heads and tight beads. Well domed. Big plant produces good side shoots.

We use this as a border to keep the rabbits out of our garden beds.

Seriously hard to capture the awesome color of this iris. I am not sure whether the old film cameras could do better on some of these tougher colors. This one grows well here in Indiana.

Grows like a weed in Indiana. Somehow it is really hard to capture the "presence" of this bloom on camera. It is so much more in real life viewing.

Vigorous grower in Indiana. A trait not mentioned often enough among iris growers. There's nothing wrong with telling it like it is on a given cultivar. I hate to purchase a plant and wait four or five years to get an increase or a bloom.

This is the same tree used to make John Naka's world famous "Goshin" bonsai (google it).

By OldGardener on May 17, 2013 9:29 PM, concerning plant: False Pimpernel (Lindernia grandiflora)

Extremely fast growing ground cover primarily used around ponds and bog gardens. Can being planted up to 2 inches deep in water. Although the upper zone is listed as 9, this is growing very well in zone 10b. Also, several sources state that Lindernia grandiflora requires wet conditions. Mine are grown in full sun and in normal garden conditions and are quadrupling in size every 2-3 months.

First year. Clay soil, little amendments. Planted on the east side of this bed, so it gets morning sun, then is shaded overhead by a large tree and from the west side by bolstering daylily plants in the afternoon. Will have to see whether it survives North Central Texas' summertime.

Adoree produces wonderful, well-branched show stalks. Most unusual coloring.

This one is just not opening well for me. 5 previous buds - all disappointments; however, it has been here just under a year so it may just need another year to settle in.

Update: What a difference a month makes! With the upturn in the weather, the buds are opening well and the flower is gorgeous!

By farmerdill on May 16, 2013 7:00 PM, concerning plant: English Pea (Lathyrus oleraceus 'Survivor')

A very productive afila type pea. Short stiff plant that has leaves but masses of stiff tendrils at the top. Pods set at the top and mature uniformly. Designed for once over machine harvest but very easy to pick by hand. Excellent flavor.

By bonitin on May 16, 2013 8:06 AM, concerning plant: Perennial Hardy Foot Begonia (Begonia pedatifida)

This Begonia is supposed to be hardy in my zone 8a. I didn't take the chance though last winter and took it inside in a well-lit but unheated room, where it kept its foliage, while it normally would have gone dormant. This spring I rooted a piece and will risk that next winter in the full ground in my garden. Will update this next spring..

By bonitin on May 16, 2013 5:16 AM, concerning plant: Kowhai (Sophora microphylla)

I love this tree. Mine will never get to flower or grow very big as I cannot provide it with the full sun it requires, but I love the delicacy of its foliage. I have it in a big container and take it inside when hard frosts are expected.

By bonitin on May 16, 2013 4:33 AM, concerning plant: Fern-leaf Pelargonium (Pelargonium fruticosum)

This is absolutely my favorite Pelargonium. It blooms non-stop even in the middle of the winter when I take it indoors and put in a bright unheated attic room.
Everything is beautiful on it, the delicate ferny foliage on the reddish-purplish stems, the strong fragrance, and the lovely flowers, quite big for a scented Pelargonium, and it's a magnet to bees!:)

By diggit on May 15, 2013 12:04 PM, concerning plant: Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'Beula')

Was reported to rebloom in California.
Note that the pinker of the images is scanned from 35mm film while the whiter sharper image is digital and is more true to the actual appearance of the bloom. I am finding this to be common not only from digital format compared to film format but even from camera to camera............ and film brand differences as well on the old slides and negatives.

One grower in New England commented that it was one of the few that stood up under the strong winds that are prevalent there.
