[ Orchid (Cattleya Olivia [1]) | Posted on January 2, 2017 ]

Please be aware that there are presently three Cattleya Olivia grexes due to the reclassification of some of the parent species into Cattleya.

  • Olivia (1) - the original Cattleya Olivia - registered as C. intermedia X C. trianae
  • Olivia (2) - originally Laelia Olivia - registered as C. crispa X C. xanthina
  • Olivia (1907) - originally Laeliocattleya Olivia - registered as C. schroederae X C. jongheana
[ Orchid (Dendrobium Samarai) | Posted on January 2, 2017 ]

The unusual spelling of Samarai is actually how this grex is registered with the RHS. Many offer it with the spelling 'Samurai' instead.

[ Lily (Lilium 'Alcan Old Lace') | Posted on December 8, 2016 ]

Barbara Adams Eichendorf has kindly provided some information on this cultivar on the Yahoo Lilium Group. With her permission, I have added her photo and her comments here:

'Alcan Old Lace' was introduced by a nursery called Alyssa's Garden which was located in Fort St. John, B.C. I don't know if that nursery still exists... I was on their mailing list for quite a few years but haven't received a catalogue from them in several years. I know that they grew mainly Asiatic lilies as well as some martagons. I'm quite sure that 'Alcan Old Lace' was one of their own hybrids, but I don't think it was ever registered. They also had another of their seedlings, a spotted white martagon called 'Alcan Dorothy White' for sale at the same time as 'Alcan Old Lace' was offered. I have no idea if they introduced any other martagons besides these two.
[ Lily (Lilium 'Pink Flavour') | Posted on November 29, 2016 ]

Due to confusion with this cultivar and a few similar lilies, I strongly recommend checking with the RHS lily register to confirm the identity of the plant. A few key distinctions between the often-confused 'My Joe Ann', 'Pink Flavour' and 'Pearl Jessica' lilies are:

  • A photo of 'Pearl Jessica' is available on the Lily Company BV's website (who released the cultivar originally).
  • 'My Joe Ann' is recorded as growing to 1.2-1.5m and 'Pink Flavour' to 1.2m, but 'Pearl Jessica' is recorded as only 0.7m.
  • 'My Joe Ann' has a (darker) pink throat, whilst 'Pink Flavour' has a light yellow-green throat and 'Pearl Jessica' has a light yellow-orange throat.
  • Hankz also notes that 'My Joe Ann' is often mislabelled; his plant had near-black stems (the register says they are mid-green) and no secondary buds

[ Orchid (Grammatocymbidium Ayodhaya) | Posted on November 27, 2016 ]

This hybrid was initially registered as Cymbidium Ayodhaya and the parentage given as Orchid (Cymbidium Golden Vanguard) X Orchid (Cymbidium Valerie Absolonova).

However, according to the hybridiser (Kobsukh Kaenratana of Pakkret Orchids), he used mixed pollen of Valerie Absolonova (3N) and Grammatophyllum scriptum (2N) on Golden Vanguard (4N). All the resulting progeny have strong Cymbidium traits, but also exhibit key traits found in F1 Grammatocymbidium hybrids, something that wasn't initially recognised:

For example, they show some upright roots which should not be found in any heavily ensifolium-influenced hybrids. Leaves are a bit wider than normal heavily-ensifolium-influenced hybrids and have some twist. Sheath of flower buds open so early when they are still short which suggest a common character of Grammatophyllum. (This trait is a dominant one as all F1 Grammatocymbidium exhibit this trait). And the lip is different from typical Cymbidium lip.

As of January 2018, Kobsukh has advised the RHS and the registration has been updated to show the correct hybrid genus and parentage: Orchid (Cymbidium Golden Vanguard) X Bell Orchid (Grammatophyllum scriptum).
[ Orchid (Grammatocymbidium Pakkret Adventure) | Posted on November 22, 2016 ]

Full parentage is: Orchid (Cymbidium Tender Love) X Orchid (Grammatophyllum Yuan Nan Tiger). It is known to be fertile.

[ Orchid (Cymbidium insigne 'Tikitere') | Posted on November 18, 2016 ]

This particular clone is a selection by Andy Easton and is a diploid.

[ Orchid (Grammatocymbidium Pakkret Vista) | Posted on November 10, 2016 ]

Full parentage is: Orchid (Cymbidium Golden Vanguard) X Orchid (Grammatophyllum Yuan Nan Tiger).

To the best of my knowledge, all plants to date have been made with Cym. Golden Vanguard 'Emperor' and are triploids.

[ Lady's Slipper (Cypripedium 'Kentucky Maxi') | Posted on November 1, 2016 ]

This cross is not currently listed in the RHS registry, so there is currently no grex name. Parentage comes from the McClure and Zimmerman website (product #14733).

[ Orchid (Oncostele Golden Trident) | Posted on September 24, 2016 ]

Full parentage is: Bicton Rhynchostylis (Rhynchostele bictoniensis) X Orchid (Oncidium Tiger Hambühren)

[ Orchid (Gomcidumnia Carnival Costume 'Summer Sprite') | Posted on September 22, 2016 ]

Current accepted parentage: Oncidesa Sarcatum X Tolumnia Red Belt

[ Orchid (Rhyncattleanthe Michael Rainey) | Posted on September 22, 2016 ]

This grex has previously been classed as Laeliocattleya and Brassolaeliocattleya.

The full parentage is Orchid (Cattlianthe Trick or Treat) X Orchid (Rhyncholaeliocattleya Waianae King)

At least some seedlings are the result of the cross Cattlianthe Trick or Treat 'Orange Rock' X Rhyncholaeliocattleya Waianae King 'Orchid Heights'.

[ Orchid (Cattleya Corazón René) | Posted on September 21, 2016 ]

Some seedlings are from the cross Drumbeat 'Heritage' X Orpettii 'Eastwind'.

[ Orchid (Rhyncholaeliocattleya Misty Green) | Posted on September 21, 2016 ]

Registered in 2011. Some seedlings are the result of Rhyncholaeliocattleya Meditation 'King's Ranson' X Rhyncholaeliocattleya Xanthette 'Chartreuse'.

[ Orchid (Cymbidium Veitchii [1889] 'Concolor') | Posted on September 21, 2016 ]

This particular hybrid is a selection from the 1889 Veitchii grex (unfortunately there is a second Veitchii grex registered in 1911 with the RHS that is composed of Cymbidium devonianum X Cymbidium lowianum, although that is correctly referred to as Orchid (Cymbidium Langleyense)). Veitchii (1889) is typically referred to as Eburneo-lowianum for clarity, although Veitchii (1889) is the RHS accepted name.

[ Orchid (Cymbidium Alexanderi 'Westonbirt') | Posted on September 20, 2016 ]

This particular cultivar is one of the most famous Cymbidium hybrids and is a naturally-occurring tetraploid. It is one of the few surviving cultivars from the early Alexanderi crosses made in the 1910s-1930s (it originated from a remake in the late 1910s and was awarded in 1922). It has been extensively used in breeding over the past century.

The maximum recorded flower count for this selection is 10.

The vast majority of plants after the Second World War were virused (likely with Cymbidium Mosaic), although a few clean pieces have survived and been propagated. These are still in circulation in both the US and Australia.

Full parentage is: Orchid (Cymbidium Veitchii [1889] 'Concolor') * X Orchid (Cymbidium insigne 'Sanderi').

* also known as Eburneo-lowianum 'Concolor'.

[ Orchid (Cymbidium Bethlehem 'Ridgeway') | Posted on August 25, 2016 ]

This cross was registered in 1963 and may now only exist in the Santa Barbara Orchid Estate. A photo of this hybrid can be found in the book "Growing Orchids" by Brian and Wilma Rittershausen.
