[ Northern Chinese-Hats (Karomia tettensis) | Posted on March 8, 2021 ]

For some reason the common name "Tahitian Hat Plant" has been attached to this plant and I'm guessing it has something to do with this plant's specific epithet of "tettensis".

HOWEVER,
"tettensis" does NOT mean "of or from Tahiti", it means "of or from Tete".

Tete is the name of one of Mozambique's ten provinces and also of that province's capital city.

Note how Mozambique is a country in southeast Africa while Tahiti is a French colonial era holdover in eastern Polynesia which is nowhere near the place the plant is actually named after.

[ Mat Saltbush (Atriplex corrugata) | Posted on March 8, 2021 ]

Mat Saltbush is one of several woody species in the genus Atriplex that can be found in Utah but its range is restricted to the southeastern third of the state that lies within the Colorado Plateau (including the Uinta Basin) to which it is endemic. In Utah, this species can be found in Carbon, Duchesne, Emery, Garfield, Grand, Kane, San Juan, Sevier, Uintah, and Wayne counties. This species' range also extends into Colorado (Delta, Mesa, Moffat, Montezuma, and Montrose counties) and New Mexico (San Juan County).

One place where this plant is unavoidably ubiquitous is along U.S. Highway 191 in Emery County, Utah between the ghost town of Woodside and Interstate 70 and Green River (the city) where it grows in salt flats and in some places is the only plant found growing there. Some other plants that it sometimes grows with that I recognized include Globemallow (Sphaeralcea), Porcupine Pricklypear (Opuntia polyacantha var. hystricina), Black Greasewood (Sarcobatus vermiculatus), and Astragaluses (Astragalus).

[ Brazilian Peppertree (Schinus terebinthifolia var. raddianus) | Posted on February 26, 2021 ]

This is apparently the only variety of this species that is known to have escaped from cultivation in the United States. According to the USDA, this plant now has established wild populations in six U.S. states and territories (California, Florida, Hawaii, Texas, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands). Its indigenous range (according to the Catalogue of Life) is limited to only five of Brazil's twenty-six states and includes the states of Bahia, Minas Gerais, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo.
