[ Lily (Lilium 'Antique Lace') | Posted on June 30, 2012 ]

A selected clone out of the 'Heirloom Lace' strain by Judith Freeman, this is an elegant Lilium lankongense hybrid. Flowers are bone white with a light overlay of peach, downfacing and with plenty of dark spreckling. It has a light, sweet fragrance if your nose is in the bloom. My first year stems were about 24 inches tall with bud counts of 3-5 per stem.

[ Lily (Lilium 'Eros') | Posted on June 30, 2012 ]

A sweet, charming Lilium lankongense hybrid by Chris North. The developing buds are unusual in being pubescent, which gives them a frosted or silvery sheen. The flowers have a very light, pleasant smell if your nose is in the blooms. My first year stems were very short at 18 inches tall with bud counts of 2-3 per stem.

[ Asiatic lily (Lilium 'Last Dance') | Posted on June 30, 2012 ]

I ordered this Asiatic hybrid from The Lily Garden last fall and Judith Freeman included a handwritten note saying to plant the bulbs of this cultivar in the best draining soil I have. In other words, 'Last Dance' is fussier than your average Asiatic. I planted them in a raised bed with very well drained soil. Out of 5 tiny bulbs planted, only 2 produced flowers. The other three either aborted their buds or never produced any buds at all.

It is a beautiful lily with clear, medium yellow coloring and downfacing blooms. If it can build up enough strength and vigor for future seasons, it will be a lovely garden lily.

[ Lily (Lilium African Queen) | Posted on June 30, 2012 ]

A strain of dark yellow/orange/melon-colored trumpets. It has pretty flowers but is very tall, lanky and floppy. Faintly scented during the day, the perfume intensifies at night but is never really powerful. A pleasant lily, but not one of my favorites. I would take plain old Lilium regale any day over the commonly available colored trumpet strains.

[ Lily (Lilium Golden Splendor) | Posted on June 30, 2012 ]

This lily is rather nicer than 'Pink Perfection', having blooms of clear, non-fading, saturated yellow that look right at home in an informal cottage garden setting. Still, it is a very tall, lanky and floppy grower with a fragrance that is only discernible at night. Pleasant but not one of my favorites so far.

[ Borage (Borago officinalis) | Posted on June 30, 2012 ]

One of my favorite plants to grow for bees and other pollinators. I love the fuzzy foliage and intense blue of the flowers. I hope this plant reseeds for years to come.

[ Coral Lily (Lilium pumilum) | Posted on June 30, 2012 ]

My earliest blooming lily (first week of May) in 2012, this demure species put on quite an eye-catching show with large scapes of pendent, saturated orange-red blooms. Flowers produced a light, pleasant but unusual fragrance if your nose is in the bloom.

[ Lily (Lilium 'Yellow Whoppers') | Posted on June 30, 2012 ]

A beautiful Asiatic hybrid by Judith Freeman. I received this cultivar as a pair of bonus bulbs with an order of Lilium lankongense hybrids from The Lily Garden. I planted it with low expectations, but it turned out to be a beautiful and charming garden lily with outfacing blooms and light spreckling in the throat.

[ Lily (Lilium 'Madame Butterfly') | Posted on June 30, 2012 ]

An exquisite, healthy Aurelian hybrid lily by Mak. Although not fragrant, the flowers have beautiful coloration and wonderful texture provided by the numerous raised papillae. This is a charming and memorable cottage garden lily.

[ Lily (Lilium Pink Perfection) | Posted on June 30, 2012 ]

So far, I have been quite disappointed with this strain. Out of 25 bulbs, only one plant produced flowers that are noticeably pink. All of them are very tall (6 feet) in their first year and very lanky and floppy, in spite of being planted in full, all day sun. Fragrance is evident only at night.

[ Asiatic Lily (Lilium 'Rosepoint Lace') | Posted on June 30, 2012 ]

A very pretty and elegant Asiatic lily strain with Lilium lankongense ancestry by Judith Freeman. Large (for an Asiatic), outfacing blooms with heavy amounts of spreckling. Nice, light, sweet fragrance if your nose is in the bloom. This cultivar is unusual in that the pink tones deepen as the blossoms age.

[ Lily (Lilium 'Karen North') | Posted on June 30, 2012 ]

A gorgeous Asiatic hybrid by Chris North. It has both Lilium lankongense and Lilium lancifolium blood and beautiful, downfacing orange blooms with mottled markings. This lily likes to wander underground before emerging and supposedly forms numerous stem bulblets. It has a light, pleasant fragrance that can only be detected if your nose is in the blossom.

Although my first year stems were smashed by a construction crew, they survived to bloom nicely on shorter-than-expected 24 inch stems. I have high hopes for this cultivar for next season. A charmer!

[ Lily (Lilium Tiger Babies) | Posted on June 30, 2012 ]

A lovely Asiatic hybrid by Judith Freeman. Beautiful, clear, light peach outfacing blooms with heavy black speckling. My first year plants are short--20 inches tall or so-- but seem very healthy and happy. Although described as being "lightly fragrant," my nose detects no odor.

[ Lily (Lilium 'Satisfaction') | Posted on June 30, 2012 ]

A fluorescent watermelon-colored lily with a sweet, slightly fruity perfume. It does not handle heat or intense sunshine very well. Even in part shade, flowers are prone to fading and have been lasting only two days each in 90 degree F weather. This is a Dutch-bred OT that may be more useful for the cut flower trade than for general garden use.

[ Lily (Lilium Triumphator) | Posted on June 30, 2012 ]

A lovely and charming LO lily that is perfect for cottage gardens. Fragrance is faint during the day but becomes intense and pervasive at night. Plants are robust and beefy and produce giant blooms 9-10 inches across. My first year stems are 5 feet tall with 5-9 buds each. I am happy to have it in my garden.

[ Lily (Lilium 'Quintessence') | Posted on June 30, 2012 ]

'Quintessence' has one of the nicest and headiest perfumes among OT lilies, perfectly blending the delicious scents of trumpet and Oriental lilies and adding an extra overtone of honeysuckle. Color seems to be heat and sun sensitive, but it is usually a pretty cream with reddish-orange markings in the throat.

[ Lily (Lilium 'Caravan') | Posted on June 30, 2012 ]

Another one of Judith Freeman's exquisite OT lilies, 'Caravan' is an excellent garden lily with a trumpet-like form (similar to 'Silk Road') and a heady, delicious perfume. Although many OT lilies seem to have the same basic color pattern (yellow with red centers), few of them are as refined as 'Caravan'.

[ Lily (Lilium 'Silk Road') | Posted on June 30, 2012 ]

I have enjoyed the giant, lushly fragrant blooms of this lily in my garden this season. The fragrance intensifies and really starts to waft at dusk and will continue till early the next morning. I can sometimes see nocturnal moths hovering around the blooms. One of the best!

[ Lily (Lilium 'Conca d'Or') | Posted on June 30, 2012 ]

An exquisite Dutch-bred OT lily hybrid. 'Conca d'Or' has long lasting, gigantic blooms with beautiful coloring, wonderful fragrance and amazing garden presence. My first year stems are 4 feet tall with 8-9 buds each. One of my favorites to cut for indoor use since the fragrance is strong enough to scent several rooms but never becomes cloying or overpowering.

I am not sure why, but in the past I have purchased many cut stems of 'Conca d'Or' that look just like what I am growing now but were absolutely scentless.

[ Lily (Lilium 'El Condor') | Posted on June 30, 2012 ]

A wonderful, robust LO lily with a heady, pervasive, sweet, gardenia-like perfume. My first year stems were nearly six feet tall with enormous blooms 9-10 inches across. Although the color can fade in hot sunshine, it is usually a nice, deep pink that looks spectacular in the garden. One of my favorites!
