[ Species Iris (Iris albicans) | Posted on April 4, 2013 ]

This natural hybrid was collected by Lange in 1860. It is sometimes listed as an Intermediate Iris.

This historical iris was grown throughout the Middle East and Northern Africa since at least the 1400s and is still found growing on the tops of gravesites there.

I. albicans differs from I. florentina in that it holds its flowers closer to the stem, the flowers themselves are more "papery," and the base of the standards is hairless. I. albicans also has wider leaves that are prone to twist.

[ Spotted Dead Nettle (Lamium maculatum 'Orchid Frost') | Posted on March 28, 2013 ]

Very rugged - grows rapidly. Although the upper recommended zone is 8, this cultivar is growing extremely well in zone 10.

[ Amur Maackia (Maackia amurensis) | Posted on March 25, 2013 ]

Fixes nitrogen and is a good choice for difficult sites. It also has interesting bark (curled, peeling strips). Maackia has a short main trunk - it starts branching 3-5' from the ground and has pinnate leaves. Transplants easily.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Spellbinder') | Posted on December 16, 2012 ]

Although not listed as a re-bloomer, it re-blooms here in zone 10 and retains both form and color despite 115 degree heat.

[ Tropical Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'Bienvenue') | Posted on December 15, 2012 ]

First bloomed when it was 110 degrees+ outside and the plant was less than 2' tall. Very robust once acclimated.
