[ Peruvian Lilies (Alstroemeria) | Posted on March 1, 2016 ]

Daisy found this T&M article with detailed advice about getting Alstroemeria seeds to germinate.
Warm-cold-warm moist stratification.

http://garden.org/thread/view_...
http://www.thompson-morgan.com...

This gave them fairly good results with moist seeds:
60F for 2 weeks
Refrigerator for two weeks - 40F
Then 50F

Then it suggests a lot of detail that boils down to:
3 seeds in a cup of moist mix, covered with plastic film.
70F for three weeks
40F for three weeks.
Then 70F again. Expect germination in 10 to 14 days,
Don't try to separate seedlings, they have fussy roots. Plant as a clump if necessary.

French heirloom snow pea (before 1860). Large, flat green pods for steaming, stir-frying, or eating raw. Gourmet flavor. Creamy-white blooms.

[ Lettuce (Lactuca sativa 'Flashy Lightning') | Posted on December 9, 2015 ]

'Flashy Lightning' first forms a mini-head, then a denser butterhead before bolting. It combines oakleaf and butterhead traits. The maroon splashes become pink in the blanched heart. Crisp, mild, sweet, very low in bitterness.

Many of Frank Morton's new lettuce varieties are said to be well adapted to the PNW and organic growing conditions.

Called "a hybrid of mizuna and kyona" by Mark Mathew Braunstein in
Microgreen Garden: Indoor Grower's Guide to Gourmet Greens.
('Kyona' is said to be Brassica juncea and 'Altor' said to be B. rapa,
so if Mark is right, that's an inter-species hybrid.)

Green stem Bok Choy 'Dong Zhi'. F1 Hybrid. 55 DTM.
Cold tolerant - best in cool areas

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Indigo Apple') | Posted on July 17, 2015 ]

Indigo Apple is a very new "black" variety, or "blue and red" variety, developed by Brad Gates at Wild Boar Farms in Napa, California. The original cross was made by PKS Heirlooms.

Indigo Apple seeds were introduced commercially by Wild Boar Farms in 2013, in their F5 generation.

Ancestry includes 'OSU Blue' and 'Indigo Rose'.

It is said to be indeterminate, very vigorous, regular-leaf with small, 2-6 ounce, round, blue-and-red fruits. The fruits are usually blue on top, perhaps because the top gets the most sun.

[ Dutch Corn Salad (Valerianella locusta 'Dutch') | Posted on August 12, 2014 ]

Old-time favorite for salads or cooked greens. Mild, pleasant, nutty flavor.
Very tender, oval green leaves form small rosettes.

The small blanched heart is a gourmet delicacy.

'Little Gem' has some heat tolerance, but it grows better in cooler temps.
In hot climates, 'Little Gem' is best as a spring or fall crop.
If you have mild summers, succession plant it all summer long.

Like most lettuces, it needs moist rich soil. 33-50 DTM.
800 seeds/gram. (One gram is listed as seeding a 15' row.)
Because the heads are compact, thin to 6.5" x 6.5" for maximum yield.

Barely cover seeds. Germination temperature: 40-75°F. Emerges in 2-5 days.

[ Qingchuan Arrow Bamboo (Fargesia rufa) | Posted on July 10, 2014 ]

Fargesia rufa is very cold hardy for a bamboo. It tolerates one-night exposures down to -10º F in still air and only loses its leaves. Colder or windier nights or prolonged cold spells will kill the culms or even the roots. Mine was completely flattened and lightly buried by a snow storm, but it sprang back without harm when I brushed the snow off.

Fargesia rufa prefers some shade and tolerates considerable shade.

{Edited to reflect information from OldGardener}
According to the American Bamboo Society, Fargesia species in general do not tolerate very high summer temperatures,
but humidity must be a factor, as OldGardener points out below.
http://www.bamboo.org/BambooSo...
http://www.bamboo.org/BambooSo...

Maximum height is 10 feet.
Maximum culm diameter is 0.5 inches.
Clumps droop into a "mushroom" or "umbrella" shape.
Clumps expand by only an inch or a few inches per year. Rhizomes are shallow and easily contained by shallow barriers.

Flowers are said to be shaped like toothbrushes.
The culms are smooth and have very few branches.

[ Ice Plant (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum) | Posted on May 22, 2014 ]

Leaves and stems are thick, juicy and acidic, like lemon juice (some say sour). It's slightly salty.
Covered with small white "crystals" which give it an unusual "velvety" texture.
Perennial, said to be hardy to Zone 9 but frost tender.
Fragile, requires protection from hot sun

[ Snap Bean (String (Phaseolus vulgaris 'Anellino Giallo') | Posted on January 21, 2014 ]

Pole bean. Yellow pods.

[ Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris 'Meraviglia di Venezia') | Posted on January 21, 2014 ]

The black-seeded variety of 'Marvel of Venice' takes 78 days to mature, but is said to have higher yield and better flavor than the white-seeded variety (54 DTM).

Both have yellow pods and are pole beans (7 foot vines, or longer).

The white-seeded variety has Romano-shaped pods 8" to 9" long and 3/4" wide.

Sow in warm soil - at LEAST 60 F soil temperature, though over 75 F gives faster germination.
