[ Scottish Harebell (Campanula rotundifolia) | Posted on April 14, 2014 ]

Grows nicely, keeps a nice compact size. Flowers are adorable and a very clear sky blue. Doesn't require much, good for a xeric setting. Survives my zone 5 easily.

[ Carpathian Bellflower (Campanula carpatica) | Posted on April 14, 2014 ]

Survives zone 5 winters with ease, doesn't require much. Mine gets full sun and very little winter protection.

[ Butterfly Bush (Buddleja davidii 'Evil Ways') | Posted on April 14, 2014 ]

Very pretty light green contrasts the deep purple of the flowers. Seems to grow OK in zone 5. Did not get very big, only 1-2 feet first year in.

[ Basket of Gold (Aurinia saxatilis) | Posted on April 14, 2014 ]

Does NOT like to be trimmed. Will die if you trim it. Had two, trimmed them a little to make them a bit more tidy, and they died within a week. Has a long sprawling "neck" like an old African violet.

[ Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) | Posted on April 14, 2014 ]

This is a massive weed in my area. Although the seed pods look really cool, they make a big mess when they "explode." Have never seen butterflies visit it.

[ Silvermound Artemisia (Artemisia schmidtiana 'Silver Mound') | Posted on April 14, 2014 ]

These plants are so very soft and have gorgeous coloring. They get HUGE. Mine are at least 2' tall and 3' around. They will take over the area where they're planted. I don't do anything special for mine. They just get massive, and they also make a huge mess in the fall when they lose their leaves.

[ Blue Star (Amsonia hubrichtii) | Posted on April 14, 2014 ]

Mine has never turned this brilliant yellow/orange in the fall. It's in full sun. Not sure why.

[ Hummingbird Mint (Agastache cana) | Posted on April 14, 2014 ]

Grows like a weed. Tag stated that it only grows to 18" by 18". I have one that grows faithfully every year to almost 5 ft tall & around! Hummingbirds are definitely attracted to this plant. Even when dead in the winter, the dead stalks still retain their wonderful scent!

[ Red Maple (Acer rubrum 'Brandywine') | Posted on April 14, 2014 ]

Seems to have survived my zone 5 winter. Is partially shaded. Leaves are a beautiful deep wine color in the fall rather than the brilliant scarlet of most red maples.

[ Amur Maple (Acer tataricum subsp. ginnala) | Posted on April 14, 2014 ]

Grows like a weed, requiring almost no care whatsoever. Beautiful fall foliage and bright green leaves in the spring. Pretty quick grower, too.

[ Mexican Giant Hyssop (Agastache mexicana Acapulco® Yellow & Pink) | Posted on October 6, 2013 ]

I just purchased a few of these. Let's see if they survive my zone 5 winter.

[ Rose (Rosa 'Golden Princess') | Posted on October 3, 2013 ]

BLACKSPOT LOVES THIS ROSE. I traditionally don't get blackspot as I'm in a high-plains desert, but we had some massive rains last month and now this rose is nekkid!! No leaves anywhere!! Not recommended if you're high humidity.

[ Floribunda Rose (Rosa 'Ketchup & Mustard') | Posted on October 3, 2013 ]

HORRIBLE MAGNET FOR BLACKSPOT! This rose is completely leafless due to blackspot. I don't treat for blackspot as I traditionally don't have blackspot, so I never sprayed. This rose lost every single leaf due to blackspot & looks naked. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR HIGH-HUMIDITY AREAS.

[ Rose (Rosa 'Blue Bajou') | Posted on October 3, 2013 ]

HORRIBLE MAGNET FOR BLACKSPOT! If you live in an area that gets a lot of moisture, this rose is NOT for you. I got a LOT of rain in a very short time and I never spray for blackspot as I traditionally do not have blackspot. My rose is now leafless!

[ Black Nightshade (Solanum americanum) | Posted on September 25, 2013 ]

Amazing. This plant grows wild in both extreme southern New Mexico and in the Denver Metro area of Colorado. I know this because I get this weed in my yard regularly now, and when I was a kid in elementary school, we'd find these berries in our playground and throw them at each other. We always called them "snakeberries." Probably because the unripe fruit has a green snake-like pattern on them. Now I know what this plant is (I figured it was related to tomatoes, as the plant and flowers look very similar, but the fruits are obviously much different). Never really bothered to take any extra precautions with this plant in my yard; just would grumble if I found it, as I knew it to be a weed.

[ Rose (Rosa 'Solarflash') | Posted on August 21, 2013 ]

Received this as a bare root from Palatine in 2011. Blooms in flushes throughout the season. Survives zone 5 winters with minimal mulch protection. No scent. Does not like extreme sun at my altitude. The petals blacken quickly. OK vase life (3-4 days). Not thorny at all. Doesn't seem to suffer from winter kill badly either. I have it planted in poor sandy soil, but even then I don't feed it very often.

[ Rose (Rosa 'Leonardo da Vinci') | Posted on August 13, 2013 ]

The bloom size is supposed to be large (4-5"). I've found on my particular plant that they're smaller, between 2 and 3 inches. This is comparable to what I saw in the nurseries locally as well.

[ Rose (Rosa 'Hot Tamale') | Posted on August 13, 2013 ]

Survives zone 5 winters with mulch protection. My particular bush is in partial shade (gets about 4-5 hours full sun in summer, but less in spring/fall). It's a very small bush. I think it topped off this year (2nd year in ground) at about 1ft around (tall & wide). Winterkill was completely to the ground, so I was surprised when it came back.

[ Rose (Rosa 'Pandemonium') | Posted on August 8, 2013 ]

This rose (own root) has been in constant bloom all year. It's almost 100% never without blooms. It's a pretty compact little rose, about 3' wide by 20" tall. No scent unfortunately. But the flowers don't shatter too easily and keep their color in extreme heat (98deg @ 6100ft). Colors don't seem to fade with heat, either. Always produces true orange & yellow blooms, unlike Oranges & Lemons, which produces pink/white blooms when it's that hot. Highly recommended if you can find it.

[ Rose (Rosa 'Ruby Voodoo') | Posted on August 6, 2013 ]

This is a Plant Select rose for the Rocky Mountain region. I purchased this rose in Spring 2012. It never thrived. It just sat there all summer, never put out new growth, got spindly, and then I believe the winter of 2012/2013 finally killed it. I purchased a new rose in the beginning of August 2013. I have it in a different part of my yard. Let's hope that it does better this time than the last time. I will update in 2014 how it fares over the winter.
