[ Rose (Rosa 'Summer Sunshine') | Posted on August 1, 2013 ]

This was my first yellow rose I bought back in '09 from Home Depot. I had to move it once as I had it on the west side of the house where it got very little sun to the east side, where it's in full sun. The soil it's in is incredibly poor -- nasty and sandy. This rose has got to be the hardiest rose on the planet. Not only did it survive the move, but it survives in the bad soil, being 100% neglected (forgot to water it one summer until I saw it bloom, then remembered I put a rose there), buried in weeds, no winter protection at ALL for my zone 5... and it just keeps coming back & blooming every year! Not too good as far as vase-life, though, and doesn't have the strongest scent. But a real trouper!

[ Rocky Mountain Beardtongue (Penstemon strictus) | Posted on August 1, 2013 ]

I dug this penstemon from my mom's property in the Southern NM mountains (Sacramento Mountains) and brought it home to Colorado in '10. I planted it, watered it, and it "died." The following year it sprouted, but it never bloomed. In 2012 it bloomed for the first time. This year (2013), it's been blooming almost constantly for over 2 months. It gets pretty tall, about 3.5 ft. Hummingbirds, however, don't seem to like it as much as the agastaches next to it. I've found that the stems get "topheavy" and will topple over from the blooms.

[ Mexican Hyssop (Agastache 'Orange Nectar') | Posted on August 1, 2013 ]

Not as tall or as wide as the "grape nectar" cultivar. Topped off this year between 4-12" tall (different plants, all planted next to each other). Also only about 4-6" wide, too. Not overly impressed by this cultivar. There are many other orange agastaches that are more impressive.

I bought 9 plants of this cultivar from the Bloomtastic! brand (http://www.hineshort.com/Plant...). Every single one died. I don't know if they were forced too early (probably as this is a fall-blooming plant and I bought all mine in the mid-spring & they were all blooming like crazy).

Bought this as an "annual" in fall 2012. Planted it like any other agastache. Came back no problem 2013. Blooming like mad this fall. Not as scented as some other agastaches, though. Very slender agastache compared to A. cana. These seem to get taller than the "Orange Nectar" variety at about 2ft tall and about 8" across.

[ Rose (Rosa 'Bing Crosby') | Posted on July 29, 2013 ]

Survived my zone 5 winter (bought in 2012, bloomed for the first time July 2013). Kind of a small plant, only about 12" tall this year. Hoping it gets bigger next year.

[ Rose (Rosa 'Florescent Fuschia') | Posted on July 26, 2013 ]

Bought this rose in 2011, it has survived 2 of my zone 5 winters with moderate (3-5") of mulch. Doesn't die back 100% like some other roses. This year (2013) is the first year it has bloomed. A rather boring rose considering the name (I was expecting something bright & gaudy.. it's rather ordinary). No scent. Poor vase life (less than 1 day). Poor cane life (rose fades after 1-2 days on the bush). Doesn't shatter through, just looks yucky. Not highly recommended.

[ Rose (Rosa 'Oklahoma') | Posted on July 26, 2013 ]

Survives zone 5 winters with minimal winter mulch protection, but dies down practically 100% to the ground. By mid summer, is about 2' tall. Only produces 2-3 canes. One of my absolute favorite reds. Smells strong like Mr. Lincoln, but doesn't purple with age like Mr.L does. Good vase life.

[ Floribunda Rose (Rosa 'Julia Child') | Posted on July 26, 2013 ]

Survives my zone 5 comfortably with moderate mulch protection. Doesn't get overly big here. Tallest it's ever been was about 18" and about 24" around. A very good floribunda, though. Smells wonderful. Kind of poor vase life (2-3 days) as it's shatter-prone to me. And earwigs seem to be attracted to this rose in particular. Don't know why. They don't hang out near the Scentimental, the Honeysweet, the Joseph's Coat, or the Othello that are right next to this rose within a 4ft radius.

[ Rose (Rosa 'Queen Elizabeth') | Posted on July 26, 2013 ]

This is a grafted rose. Never gets any bigger than 1' tall and 2' wide. A very small bush for me. Dies back to the ground every year despite heavy mulching. But it does come back every year!

[ Rose (Rosa 'Molineux') | Posted on July 26, 2013 ]

Bought this back in 2010 from Roses Unlimited as an own root. Dies back to the ground every winter even with heavy mulch protection (my zone 5). Never gets any bigger than 14" tall and about 12" wide. Not overly impressed with this rose.. never seems to get the deep yellow color, has practically no scent, shatters in a vase.

[ Rose (Rosa 'Della Reese') | Posted on July 26, 2013 ]

The two pictures I added on 7/26 don't do this rose any justice. The rose had already started to fade with our sun/heat & then we had a quick thunderstorm downpour that beat up the bloom. The night before, when I saw the bloom originally, the center of the bloom was a deep magenta that practically glowed in the dark and the outer petals were a slightly lighter shade. A truly spectacular rose. Smells good too. Slightly sweet. Got this as a bareroot rose spring 2013, so let's see how it overwinters.

[ Anise Hyssop (Agastache foeniculum 'Golden Jubilee') | Posted on July 18, 2013 ]

Bought this plant about 5 years ago and planted it in an area that gets morning/noon sun. It was an absolutely beautiful golden color the first year. The following year, and every year thereafter, the leaves were the dark color seen in my photos. Not at all golden. Blooms the same color as always, however. Tolerates poor soil and my zone 5 winter well.

[ Sedum (Petrosedum rupestre subsp. rupestre 'Angelina') | Posted on July 16, 2013 ]

Does not tolerate being stepped on at ALL.

[ Sunroots (Helianthus tuberosus) | Posted on July 12, 2013 ]

When I bought my house in '05, this plant was growing in the front yard near the street. It was a nice sunflower type of plant, so I decided that I'd let it grow. No harm in letting it grow where it was. I never water it, I never feed it, I never take care of it, and it comes back every single year faithfully in the same spot. It's not invasive in my area and the flowers last 4-6 weeks (mid-late summer to mid fall). I haven't found anything to detract from it, so it stays. Anything that grows wild in my yard & produces pretty flowers like this deserves a spot!

[ Rose (Rosa 'Kordes' Brillant') | Posted on June 21, 2013 ]

A very strong rose, survived me moving it 3 times in my yard. Withstands my extreme temperatures (100+ summer, -10+ winter). Doesn't fade, doesn't shatter easily. A tidy plant, not leggy.

[ Rose (Rosa 'Ink Spots') | Posted on June 20, 2013 ]

Survived zone 5 winter with mulching in an open yard w/no protection from ice/snow/wind other than mulch around the base. Lost very little to winterkill, had to prune only about 2' off the top canes. Already grown to over 3' tall this season. A very upright rose!

[ Rose (Rosa 'Sonia') | Posted on June 19, 2013 ]

This rose is listed as being very fragrant and I have smelled Sonia smelling WONDERFUL. My own plant, however, produces flowers that smell horrendously like pepper for some reason. Very unpleasant. Only reason why I haven't shovel pruned this rose is that it produces flowers in all sorts of bad weather and is very dependable for producing blooms all season.

[ Rose (Rosa 'Crimson Gallica') | Posted on June 19, 2013 ]

This rose is one of the hardiest I've ever seen. I can't say that it's an evergreen in my zone, but pretty close to it. It's the last to lose its leaves in the fall/winter and the VERY first to put new leaves out in the spring. Ice/snow/freezing winds don't faze this rose whatsoever. Gets no protection from wind and has very little mulch around the base. Blooms like crazy in the spring, a very very bushy plant. Not bad with thorns. VERY hardy. Too bad it's a once-bloomer.

[ Floribunda Rose (Rosa 'Ketchup & Mustard') | Posted on June 13, 2013 ]

Amazingly, this rose survived my zone 5 winter with mulching. I did bury this rose pretty deep and piled about 4" of cedar mulch on it last year (2012). It was scraggly all last year (2012), but seems to be stronger this year (2013). It is one of the first to produce a bud for this 2013 season (running about 2-2.5 months late due to a much-long lasting winter. Our last killing freeze date was late April).

[ Spiderwort (Tradescantia 'Concord Grape') | Posted on June 11, 2013 ]

Extremely good plant for colder zones, pretty xeric, likes full sun. Flowers close up about an hour before sunset.
