[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Carlotta') | Posted on June 10, 2018 ]

A pretty red daylily. They are very recurved or they would easily be a 5" flower. The gold center is pretty against the multi-shaded red that ranges from cherry to raspberry. They bloomed all of May and into June here in south LA. zone 9.

I got 2 plants April 2017 in a "rebloomer" pkg. from Gilbert Wild & Son. They bloomed all of May and now into June. What a sight to behold these tall orange beauties. They got over 36" tall with 5" flowers that seem to glow. They have strong scapes that hold upright through wind and rain. In one year they have doubled to 4 plants, so I'll have a nice clump in a couple of years.

Pretty for a smaller red bloom, but very rust susceptible here in south Louisiana's humidity. I've struggled to keep it going this spring 2018 as the rust almost killed it and blooms were limited and substandard quality even with systemic and topical remedies.

My least liked yellow I have. It's just plain and the flower is small and shrivels faster than most. It came with a "Rebloomer" pkg. so I'll see its bloom cycle and then move it to a less prominent spot in my yard.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Pandora's Box') | Posted on June 10, 2018 ]

It's my favorite in the contrasting 'Eye' category. The colors really brighten up a darker area and stand out well with darker foliage plants. Mine bloomed all of May and now into June. As they multiply I intend to make a row of them as I think it will make a striking statement.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Going Bananas') | Posted on June 10, 2018 ]

What a blooming machine! It's bloomed all of April and May and is still blooming in June 2018. I love the creped petals and cheery clear yellow. It looks a lot like my 'Brocade Gown,' which is a slightly lighter yellow. I got it Spring 2017 in a pkg. of 15 "Rebloomers" from Gilbert Wild & Son.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis 'San Ignacio') | Posted on June 9, 2018 ]

This is one of the tallest and sturdiest of my rebloomers. I got 2 plants in April 2017 from Gilbert Wild & Son as part of a 15 rebloomers package. This year they grew over 36" and bloomed all of May. What a sight! The stems are finger sized, so they stand tall through wind and rain. The flowers are large, to 6" +, and held up more than a day. In one year the plants doubled, so they are prolific, too.

[ Begonia 'Jive' | Posted on June 9, 2018 ]

I got a small starter plant of this from a trade with another Louisiana grower in Feb 2018. It had 2 small leaves. It has grown very fast into a lovely 7"x7" plant with a dozen striking colored leaves. I have it with my African violets and Episcias on shelves by an east window, where it gets 4 hours of morning filtered sun. Then my SunBlaster light comes on for 8 hours. Its bright green is a nice mix with the dark african violet leaves and asst. colors of my Episcia leaves. I keep the soil slightly damp by watering every other day and it seems very happy.

[ Daylily (Hemerocallis fulva 'Kwanso') | Posted on June 9, 2018 ]

I have the 'Kwanso' with variegated foliage I received Sept. 2017 in a daylily trade. It stands out amongst the 20 other varieties growing around it because of the unusual cream and green striped foliage. The flower is the same as my regular 'Kwanso', tall and double. The foliage is evergreen here in zone 9 and the plant blooms in mid season, June/July, like my other 'Kwanso'.

[ African Violet (Streptocarpus 'Irish Flirt') | Posted on June 9, 2018 ]

I grew my 'Irish Flirt' violets from a leaf from a trading friend. The leaf was so small but rooted easily in water & made 3 sprouts, which grew slowly but well as they stayed small. I posted pictures of this cute mini with its dime-size double white with green tinted blooms. The plants never got over 3" wide & only 2" high. I grew them on a wire shelf of african violets by an east window that got filtered morning sun about 4 hours, then they were under a SunBlaster light about 8 hours. They are easy to grow, but slow, and they really stay small if you are limited for space.

[ African Violet (Streptocarpus 'Sansoucy Julie Marie') | Posted on June 9, 2018 ]

'Sansoucy Julie Marie' is one of the easiest african violets I've ever grown. It's easy to propagate by leaves in water & blooms almost constantly. The white flower is large to about 2". It really performs well in morning filtered sun and isn't fussy in lower light conditions but blooms less. My plant never got over 8", which is a medium size violet.

[ African Violet (Streptocarpus 'Arapahoe') | Posted on June 9, 2018 ]

I grew 'Arapahoe' for years. It grew easily & became a large 12"x12" plant in 2 years. The flowers were a darker burgundy red. Later I got 'Tomahawk' with the same color flowers but a smaller 8" plant at 2 years, which size I preferred.

[ Peanut Cactus (Chamaecereus silvestrii) | Posted on May 22, 2018 ]

I called mine Rat Tails for years, but when it flowered red instead of yellow as I'd seen in pictures, I determined it was Peanut Cactus. It grows to about 12" long, sending out 1" to 4" branches all along the sides that sometimes drop to make new plants and fill a pot in about a year. So easy to care for. Too much sun makes it turn bronze color, so it only needs filtered sunlight and bright light to bloom.

[ Butterfly Pea (Clitoria ternatea 'Blue Sails') | Posted on January 14, 2016 ]

I have this gorgeous double, deep-blue flowered vine in south Louisiana. It is perennial here, although I do cut it back to 12" after a freeze and by April it takes off again. I also freely prune it a couple of times each summer to make it bushier for more flower production. It also produces an abundance of seeds for sharing. There is one with a single flower, too, but I've never grown it. This one is so spectacular, it's the best!
It likes morning sun, then only filtered afternoon sun. It needs to be kept moist by regular watering. I have propagated it by rooting cuttings made at a joint and kept in moist soil. I highly recommend it as a beautiful flowering vine that blooms almost year round in zone 9.
