Hello,

We had/have a healthy, flowering 4 feet tall Salvia Amistad (purple color), flocked by humming birds. In February winter snow fall the plant dried up. I am waiting for it to grow back. Since this is my first experience I am asking about it.

Will it grow back (I have pruned it a bit).
Do I need to do anything else?
PS- it is April now and good warm. Frozen, cold season is past.

Thanks in advance.

@sanjita,

Welcome! Welcome!

I'm zone 6a and Amistad dies with the freeze here (I grow it as an annual) in the winter and even though you haven't posted your zone, I think you have a lot warmer zone than me.

Maybe these other members who have grown Amistad (from looking at the database pics) and are a lot warmer than me could help you.

If there are any stems at the base, try scraping them a bit to see if there is any green underneath. If so it's still alive and should put out new growth as it warms up. If it's brown and dry, then it may be totally dead. I'm in zone 9a and lost a more sensitive variety with freezing temps over several nights.

I couldn't say I don't even get to freezing here in Southern California. But good luck. Just a side note it grows very easily from cuttings so you could always try that so you have some back ups maybe.

My Amistad dropped almost all of its leaves last winter when we had our first freeze in 8 years then it recovered quickly afterwards...but that was only a few hours of freezing temperatures and no snow of course. I agree with scrape test and maybe just plan for a new one, I'm sure you would want the hummers back!

Hi Sanjita and welcome !
I'm from Gresham, so very close to you. I have my amistad in pots and bring them into my unheated garage in the winter. They usually survive there with no problem. And hummingbirds really fight over them, don't they? I'm having a plant swap and will be bringing some starts from last year. It's in the "events" under community. Might want to check that out. If you could make it there, I could save you one. they go very quickly, though.

Sanjita---I don't see it in the events just yet. I just posted it, so should be in there soon.

Sorry I'm so late to the party D'Oh! , but I just started growing 'Amistad' last year and have now moved from CA to AR! Grin I adore 'Amistad', had it growing in a pot, and brought that pot to AR! That sweet baby just jumped up and started blooming again Hurray! , and just like in CA, the Hummers here love it. I am so thrilled! Lovey dubby Brought several other pots too, and things are looking good for survival of most everything. Enjoy your 'Amistad', I'm sure it will reward you year after year! nodding
