My daughter recently purchased a home and the former owner left all of her houseplants as a gift. There are some very nice plants and most I have identified for her but this one I am unsure about. It reminds me of a grass; I have since divided it because the centre portion was dead and woody. Probably something I should recognize but it is alluding me. Confused Can anyone name it?
Thanks.

I wonder if its bamboo. Look at Kumazasa.

You say the center was dead & woody - above the soil or below the soil? What kind of roots does it have? Is there any kind of underground tuber, corm, or rhizome? What's the height (& what size pot is that)?

That's what I was thinking, tho, I don't know anything about gingers. That's why I asked about the root type, tho, to try to narrow it down and rule out any obvious "nots".

Thank you for your reply! The woody and dead center was above the soil line. I had to use a sharp knife to divide it as I couldn't tear it apart with my hands. They do seem to have a smaller rhizome at the base of the stems with attached roots. There is no scent however, which I would think there would be with ginger? To me it looks like a type of grass; I do grow a variety of perennial Ornamental grasses and it is similar. Although it has a rhizome structure it doesn't look at all like ginger to me as well. The pot is 10" in diameter and the plant is about 18-24 " from the soil line at it's highest point.

Thanks, @DebbieC. Can you get a pic (or pics) of the base & root rhizome area?
