Hi guys!I am wondering if any one of you grow this rose in your garden. This is the second year I have it in my garden. I didn't let it bloom much for the first year because I want it to grow roots. And now... the first bloom since late May still looks amazing!
I am wondering if it will repeat the bloom again, all the canes have flowers on them and looks pretty full to me at this point, I don't know where it would repeat the bloom, perhaps grow more new canes? Thinking
Does your Don Juan repeat blooms, and does it bloom all the way until November?

Thanks,

Jane

Hi Jane.
I've had this rose for about 18 years, and bought another about 6 years ago.
It's a lovely producer. It does repeat bloom. I don't remember if it goes on until
November.

My first DJ had a couple of canes that have died off, but it is still a pretty strong
rose. The color of the blooms is just grand!

Love those Hybrid Hulthemia roses!
Hi,

I planted Don Juan under a tree in 2017. It reblooms with remarkably large blooms, though not many. The latest picture (attacged) us from June 2, 2017 and shows it growing up into the tree. Really great color.

Jane, your Don Juan looks amazing! I planted one last year and the blooms are gorgeous, but it's not blooming anywhere nearly as abundantly as yours, but I can tell it's a good rose. Since Roses are supposed to leap the third year, hopefully mine will! You must really know what your doing!

Jane and Roses.
I have a corner of a public park. I asked if I could create a rose garden there in 2001
and began before they could really figure out a reason to say no. Ive got more
than 30 roses there now.

Hi Jane and welcome! Welcome!

That is a gorgeous specimen of Don Juan! I don't grow him but I imagine to encourage repeat blooms you'll want to dead head the spent blooms. You'll want to do clip just above an outward facing bud eye. It will send out a new cane from that eye. I imagine it will still shoot out new canes even if you don't dead head but if you let the flowers form into hips it will think it's time to go dormant.

Thank you Ray! Will try to keep up with my deadheading this year. I have been slacking off for few seasons. Green Grin!

Thanks for the compliment Merlena, I only WISH know what I am doing. The crown princess Magarreta next to Don Juan looks like a midget still after 10 years.
I am sure your DJ will take off and bloom lots of beautiful flowers for you!

Jane, I just deadheaded two climbers this week (Climbing Iceberg) that are on trellises, and was told to deadhead the opposite of what we normally do on a rose bush: instead just above an outward facing bud, to clip an inward or downward facing bud so the growth will growing toward the trellis and not away from it. I guess the same would be true if you are growing it toward and onto a fence.

Your DJ climber is beautiful! I bought one this spring and it's in a 10 gallon pot and I haven't decided yet where it will be permanently. but am enjoying the few dk. red roses that have bloomed.

Rosemary, good point on the climber technique. I don't have any of those yet so that's good to know! Thank You!

thanks a lot Rosemary! Yes I figure which ever direction you want the new shoots grow that's where you should leave the buds.
Next year I am going to get a trellis for DJ,this year I am letting it go free.
Couldn't wait to see your photo of your DJ at its permenant location!

Jane, I'm assuming you also know about the five leaflet rule--the bud should be cut above a bud with five leaflets for the strongest new growth. Also, I assume the rule of always making sure if possible there are at least two-5 leaflets on the stem above where you are pruning holds true for climbers for the best new cane/flower growth.

I may grow the SJ as a pillar. I just noticed a cane rising with super-strong growth, and I think it is Dr. Huey. It's coming from on the bud union slightly on the underside of it.

I do know the 5 leafelt rule, no worries. Thank You!
If you are talking about that thick cane shooting up then totally don't worry about it, it is not Dr. Huey. I dont buy grafted rose and this DJ is from roseunlimted. It's a healthy new cane. Thank you for your concerns. Lovey dubby

Jane, I believe you about yours Smiling --I'm talking about mine, which came from Lowe's and for sure is grafted.
