Cool Lin!!!! Love the tree!
You know what is crazy? Someone paid $1900 a few days ago on eBay for a Jose Buono that was apparently mislabeled by the seller as a variegated Ilsemanii.
What are people thinking??
After years of my mistreatment, my Philodendron Strawberry Shake is finally making some real progress. More variegated leaves popping out, more pinkish tinged leaves, and they are finally getting bigger. I was beginning to think it would never happen

And we are not certain exactly what this is yet. Its not Epipremnum pinnatum, this is something that came from Dewey Fisk many years ago and has finally started to grow well and split its leaves. It may be a form of Monstera he had in his collection but was not identified back then

Hello,
I've been reading the forum for a while, but never posted before. I really enjoy seeing all the photos here and all the advise.
I live in Switzerland, so can grow aroids only as houseplants. Here are my new leaves:

Love those Bagindas hva2016! They are available here but extremely pricey! I am hoping the prices will drop at some point. If I got them, I would grow them in my terrariums which are my 'Houseplant Habitats'. You are doing a great job with your plants! I almost bought that P. Warszewiczii Flavum but I already have the regular one and it is huge in the Greenhouse I am not sure I would have room also for the flavum!
Welcome to the forum I hope you post often!!!!!

This little thing is actually one of my favorite new plants. Its the variegated form of the old cultivar ALocasia 'Black Stem' (which was always misnamed, because the stem is deep maroon not black, but I didn't get to name it so there ya go)

It has the lovely variegation of the variegated Alocasia macrorhizzos with a slightly more lanceolate shaped leaf, and the brilliant reddish stems. Cannot wait for it to get bigger! I was lucky to get it as a trade about a month ago,

Anthurium forgetii has a lovely new leaf that still has not hardened off, so it looks a lot more velvety than this species usually does
Thumb of 2019-08-24/Gina1960/d71c4a

And my various Anthurium papillilaminum plants all have a few new deep red velvet leaves, which will eventually harden off to a deep green, darker in shade

Thank you, Gina!

Pink Dragons have been very easy and inexpensive to obtain in Europe recently. Maybe it will be the same for you too soon.

I'm always drooling watching your anthurium photos Smiling Do you think it's possible to successfully grow the ones like Anthurium warocqueanum as houseplants?

I appreciate your compliment! I actually don't think the Queen would be a very successful houseplant unless it was grown in a large enclosed terrarium/vivarium environment. The roots like constant moisture without being waterlogged. I am growing mine in straight sphagnum moss. It really does like a lot of humidity too and does not like prolonged cold. I think that people do successfully grow things like clavinerum and crystallinum indoors. I would never say never, but it would be an expensive experiment I personally think, (unless they are a lot cheaper in Europe than they are here). The jewel alocasias that I have managed to re-collect (I used to have a lot of them) I am growing in terrarium/vivarium conditions now. There is a huge aroid explosion here in the US and maybe all over (everywhere except this forum Rolling on the floor laughing ) It seems that a lot of the plants that were in tissue culture are no longer being produced, and the existing plants are selling for hugely inflated prices. Some people buy things they have no hope of keeping alive either sue to lack of an appropriate habitat or lack of knowledge. I think its kind of sad. But hey if they have money to burn.....

Ok, crossing it off my wishlist Smiling I have 2 clarinerviums. One is quite happy, the second is a rescue that I'm nursing back to life at the moment. And also one baby Anthurium Mehani that is doing quite well. That's why I thought I might have a chance with a Queen Smiling But they are very hard to find here, and even if you do, are very-very expensive.
About jewel alocasias - I have purchased a small Alocasia Melo less than 2 months ago on-line. It arrived in quite good condition, and is growing a new leaf at the moment. I'll make sure to post a picture, when it arrives :)
Thank you so much for your advise. It sure feels good to talk about the plants with someone Smiling

I have been growing Anthurium Mehani for 10-12 years. Its a tough plant. That is one I think can do well as a houseplant.
Melo is also hard to find here except on the net where it is expensive.
I am hoping some of these plants will come down in price.
I was told by a professional grower (he grows gingers) that the tissue culture companies here in the US (who he deals with a lot, trying to get his own plants that he has hybridized or brought back from treks into the wild to collect) that they have become uninterested in using the resources to mass produce plants that are not A) patented by the hybridizer B) eye candy for people who shop in big box stores like Walmart, Home Depot and Lowes. That is why there is currently a huge boom in new Curcuma ginger varieties available. They are coming from one place who has developed and patented an entire line of plants that are being mass produced and shipped in huge numbers to the box stores where they are being snapped up in low prices. Anything that dies or remains unbought is either given back to the supplier for a refund or put on a sale rack
The independent nurseries cannot compete with the low prices that are being offered by the box stores.
None of these cool things that used to be common (you could buy Alocasia cuprea, which now can auction for hundreds of dollars) or A. 'Dewey's Reversa', Alocasia reginula, Alocasia sinuata, A. nebula...for $20 or less a few years ago. Now they are 'rare' and commanding huge prices here in the US because just as the TC production of some of these declined, the demand rose.
You almost have to know a group of collectors who are willing to trade in order to find anything like that here.
I have plants of an old Alocasia called 'Purple Prince' and the silver Loweii 'Grandis' and also ALocasia sanderiana 'Nobilis' that were all fairly common in the late 1990's early 2000's that you just cannot seem to even locate now. I bought my Nobilis at one of the local independent nurseries for I think $15 back in the day. So I consider myself really lucky to still have these after all these years

I think what you just described gives opportunity to smaller nurseries to fill the niche of unusual plants. From what I can see here in Europe, you definitely cant find any interesting aroids in larger garden centers. But there are plenty of online retailers that offer wide variety at more or less reasonable prices. I think it's becoming popular here to sell plugs - baby plants for 3-5 euro. Among them alocasia black velvet, pink dragon, silver dragon, etc. I actually prefer it this way. Demand is there, and I'm sure these companies will continue develop and offer wider and wider varieties, so, who knows maybe we'll see again those "forgotten" plants from 90s Smiling

I went to a nursery about 30 miles away last week with a friend, we are both aroid nuts, members of the IAS, he is lucky enough to be getting to go to the IAS show and sale at Fairchild in September (he has my wishlist for the sale LOL) and I happened upon this little cool find.....out of a whole tray of small ALocasia 'Mandalay', I found a variegated one!!!!!! Second photo with a slightly older/larger non-variegated Mandalay I have had for a couple months
