Thanks for starting thread # 118811. New Years Day sale - medium cheddar - $1.49/lb. Limit 5. I am the guy who likes to freeze cheese. Guess how many I bought.

New way to use up day (or three) old pasta - scrambled eggs. Warm the cooked pasta a bit, add cheese, EVOO, eggs, meat?, spices. Serve with a bit of sea salt, light sprinkle of key lime juice.

Happy New Year to all of you. I'm having blueberry pancakes for brunch today, my helper didn't show up for morning chores, guess he had too much fun last night, so I did the chores alone this morning.

I remember this whole thing as a young child. Shortly before new years we always went to the local in town fish market. There my mom would pick some type of fish with large scales. Market guy would clean the fish for us and had to wrap up all the scales for mom to bring home.

Then fish fry while the scales dried out and then they would be put out in the table (on New Years Eve and day) along with salt and some bread. Apparently this would ensure good health and wealth for the new year.

Didn't always work. Shrug!

Rita, sure was an interesting tradition, I guess if you had fish, bread and salt you wouldn't starve. What nationality were your parents?

Ok, now that Rita and I have started this, everyone needs to tell their New Years traditions. I forgot that some southerners say you have to eat greens in addition to the black eye peas for good luck. πŸ€ what's your tradition? nodding

I think greens and black eyed peas are definitely southern. Hilarious! I don't know any northerners who even eat those ever. Hilarious!

My family was German, and the tradition was to cook pork and sauerkraut on New Years day for good luck during the year. I never make sauerkraut anymore due to the high salt content. I've got a pot of 15 bean soup cooking on the stove. (Using up the ham and ham bone from Christmas. I had frozen it).

Karen, I didn't like sauerkraut till I tasted my grammas. She said the secret to using canned was to put it in a colander and wash it throughly! Sounds weird, but gets rid of a lot of salt. She then put it in a crockpot, put pre browned spareribs on tip of it, and cooked it on low for many hours. Delicious!

Lynda, it's not that I don't like sauerkraut. I'm just not supposed to eat all that sodium. Rinsing doesn't remove enough for a low sodium diet. If I'm going to cheat and eat a high sodium food, it'll be on something that I like better than sauerkraut.
