This is new for 2020 by Flowers By The Sea and I love it.

https://www.fbts.com/salvia-x-...

Beautiful and bright red flowers and I'm sure it will be as popular, if not more so, with the hummers, as the other Spires salvias. I'm hoping to get at least one when I place my spring order.

Kermit doesn't state in the link that it's ok for containers, but when you click onto Cultural Icons (above the description), it list it being a container plant, which is good, because I'm planning to pot mine up in a container.

Reading the description, this Spires salvia sounds like a winner and one that will become a mainstay in my garden every year.

I like the fact that it's listed as being hardy to zone 6. I hope it will survive the winter in the container. If not, then I'll get another one next spring.

Pretty color. If have been looking into reds since I have mostly purple blueish salvias.

You will need a largish container for this one, as it is ultra-vigorous.

The rule of thumb on hardiness in containers is that you loose one Zone. So a Zone 6 plant would be safe in a container in Zone 7. Plants in post suffer from the cold more so than those in the ground.

Kermit,

Would a 24 or a 20 inch plastic container be ok?

It has a wonderful red color, for certain.

Yes - 20 inch likely and 24 inch for certain. It is always best to pot up in size in several steps rather than putting a small potted plant directly into a large pot.
