This may be a lame question, but do you let the multiple shoots continue growing on a single tuber or do you remove them for one sturdy stem? I ask because I have 3 tubers that have sent up 3-4 shoots and I don't recall that happening last year with the ones I started early indoors. They don't appear to have disease or any issues, just 3-4 good looking stems with leaves.

Appreciate the help!

I wait until they're in the ground and growing. When they're 12-15" or so tall, I cut out all but two of the healthiest/best looking stalks and might eventually eliminate one of those. Multiple stalks are usually weak stalks.

Thank you Dan! I appreciate that information and will proceed once the ground warms enough for their new home.

Can you break them up and grow them as separate plants?

Would that work with a taller growth? Do you trim down and propagate the cutting in water or with rooting hormone in promix? Enlighten me if you would.

By breaking them up, do you mean dividing the clump? You can if you're careful and make sure each sprout/division has it's own tuber for a food source. I recently bought a package of 2 clumps with multiple short sprouts. Just for fun I wanted to see how many divisions I could get and ended up with 10, though a few were very small. I divide my clumps when I dig them in the fall. Since they are individual tubers. I seldom end up with multiple sprouts.

I've never done cuttings so I can't offer any help with that. There are lots of YouTube videos about taking cuttings.

I may try to just see what happens with a cutting, otherwise it just goes in the heap as I trim them back when I plant them up. I did divide my clumps last fall as best I could. I guess I did ok with that as the ones I potted up have sprouted and the ones I've given away had growth going on.

I'll keep you posted what I do and how it goes. Again thank you for help with this. I'm so glad to have a spot to learn from.

I usually let the sprouts grow, fool that I am and greedy for blooms. Keeping them tied up is the only problem I face with not removing sprouts.

I'm taking that advice! Big Grin I'll be tying up the extra ones here in a bit. Thank you for the advice on looking for extra blooms.
