Hello all and a very good morning, afternoon or evening to you depending on where you are! Smiling <3

I have a question re bird's nest ferns. I normally stay away from them but I was given one and while mostly neglected, it's still alive. Due to its tenacity, I want to try and take really good care of it now. I had this rather uninformed idea to place it in a huge pot and then remembered they are epiphytic so will most likely not appreciate the proposed accommodations I have for it.

That said, I am going to move it into a much, much smaller pot into a substrate of Black Gold and orchid mix. I was also thinking of placing it on a humidity tray. That said, can folks here confirm that

1) Growing in this large (though beautiful) pot is a very bad idea
2) My proposed substrate idea is a good idea.
3) That placing in a north window will be ample light

Any thoughts, ideas, advice, etc. from those growing this plant would be much, much appreciated.

Thank you all and many blessings,
Benny

1) Growing in this large (though beautiful) pot is a very bad idea Not if you don't allow it to be waterlogged. I'm assuming there is a drain hole.

2) My proposed substrate idea is a good idea. A good idea, maybe. They want lots of organic matter but nothing that stays waterlogged. I don't know what 'Black Gold' is.

3) That placing in a north window will be ample light As long as it is unfiltered and close to the window.

How long has it been growing in that planter? Does that planter have a drain hole? What is its potting medium like?

1. It's best to keep your Bird's Nest Fern (Asplenium nidus) in a plastic nursery pot and use the larger decorative container as a pretty cache pot.

2. Black Gold is a good brand but yes, amend it with perlite, orchid bark, or both.

3. Bright light is perfect, just don't subject it to any direct sun.

If using the decorative container as a cache pot, be sure to remove the nursery pot for watering and allow excess water to drain before placing the plant back into the pretty container.

As I've found out for myself + experiences from other people: always moist (never waterlogged), high humidity and NEVER water into the crown. That was my mistake and a fungus started growing on the new shoots. It held on for months, but eventually I chucked it. Also, despite having it near the shower, I watered inconsistently and let it dry out a couple of times.
