Virginia Creeper grows wild here where I live. When I first moved here from Colorado I wanted to buy some to plant it. The nurseryman laughed at me! It is so misnamed! It doesn't creep here it Runs as fast as it can EVERYWHERE! I actually got some and planted it around my patio 21 years ago. This spring I said NO MORE! It was trying to take over everything. Besides, I wanted to plant roses where the VC was planted. Pulled out and dug out the roots...only to find out that some of them were 2-3" in diameter! But I got it! Hate that stuff! Way too invasive!

If it were not for its invasiveness here I would love it! It has some very good characteristics. It covers a fence or arbor quickly and the leaves are a beautiful shape and and shade of green. It's fall colors are also very pretty! But I think I will like two climbing roses and a couple of Clematis vines covering my arbor much better! Glad you were able to get a good belly laugh at my post.

I have some of it growing in soft mounds on our split rail yard fence. It is only minimally invasive here. In another few weeks the colder nights will turn the deep green leaves to bright red and a few days later the leaves will all fall to the ground. I pull up some runners every year, snip a few vines and don't worry about it taking over. Mine came from a little piece of vine about 25 years ago.

When I was in Colorado (high country desert) I bought it at a nursery. There it was not invasive either. Neither was Japanese Honeysuckle. Total opposite here in Virginia. When I moved here I went to a nursery and asked them if they sold it. They laughed at me! When they stopped laughing they explained how it grows here in Virginia.

Climate differences are HUGE! I can't buy a butterfly bush here because it is invasive in western Oregon. I live in far eastern. I can buy it in Idaho but it won't live here as I learned the hard way.
