I am growing some Gasterias, Haworthias for many years and recently I have added a few more Aloes, or? The local nurseries are selling some really pretty plants, unfortunately very rarely do they come with a name. ( except Sempervivums. Smiling ) I was hoping the super knowledgeable people here might help me out, it is about time that I know a bit more what exactly I am growing here.
Hopefully I have at the least the genus correct....

1. thought this was Aloe

You are right everywhere there is a question mark. #8 looks like

Gasteria 'Little Warty'

(check to confirm) and #2 looks like

Aloe 'Christmas Carol'

And for what it's worth, all the Retro Gang aloes have 2 different names, including at least one that's a human name, like Donnie. So in that group you will find the same plant under 2 separate names, and of course this is a source of confusion. Donnie's alter ego is 'Bright Star'. Vito's alter ego is 'Green Sand'. Etc. Smiling Hopefully our database allows for either name to be used to arrive at the right entry.

Mine was labeled Donnie when I got it 10+ years ago but now that it looks like a mini-tree, I am going to start calling it mini palm. :whistling:

It looks very happy after I finally gave it its own pot and has already started making babies again.

I think your old haworthia is H. limfolia.
Last one is probably attenuata, which cultivar I am unfamiliar with.

nice plants . Its possible that you first one is another hybrid that i have seen around a lot that is very close to donnie. Not saying this to try to 'look knowledgable' and my methods are subjective and far from scientific (which seems to frustrate people Smiling ) This is my opinion nothing more Smiling
Donne aka 'bright star' alternates between green and blue depending on stress levels. The leaves also have dimples (like reverse bumps) The bumps are white with a red centre. here is a green and blue leaves from my collection this morning, hopefully you can see the dimples. It also stays small

The other plant stays green, doesnt have the dimples , grows more 'upright' and gets much bigger. I think one of the names the other CV goes by is 'red flame' but its name is far from clear.
All that said the plants are so close it really doesnt matter Thumbs up I am a little obsessed with these hybrids and sort of enjoy the guessing game.
Stefan is correct on haworthia limifolia
The last one is one of the white H.attenuata cv's. I have one bought as 'superwhite' see pic below. I also think there is a very simular one that goes by the cv name 'big band'
Haworthia (Haworthiopsis attenuata 'Super White')

Uh oh! I went to examine mine, I didn't see any dimple. Was this mislabeled? I've had this for 10 years and was my only aloe for many years.

We've always called this the good ole Donnie. It looks upright, full of buds now.

For what it's worth I think that looks more like Christmas carol in that pic. CC stays more green and tends to go dark rather than blue when stressed . They tend to have some all red bumps rather than small red with white. You could argue that Donnie tends to be more star like shape but than can be blurred by how you grow it . So really it's only the blue colour that signifies Donnie over cc . These two are really to close and have been around long enough to be crossed multiple times to add to the confusion.
As I said it's so confused now as to be a matter of subjective opinion. I'll happily give you my view but someone else could probably argue otherwise based on their labels and opinions . Smiling

I could see why it is confusing the differences is sublime but significant for those wanting to properly ID their Aloes. I tend to go with the tags it came with but noticed you have both so I would love a comparison photo.

Mine is getting ready to bloom so it will be fairly easy to see the comparison soon. Surely there's got to be a difference in blooms. And to think I had been looking to buy CC (I like the sound of Christmas Carol) and it is probably the one I have all along. Oh boy wait till I have to explain to my friends that the Donnie I gave them will now be named "Carol" Rolling on the floor laughing !

Fascinating stuff!! And here I thought these type of plants were just gorgeous!! Smiling
I just took another close look, and of course touched the leaves. There are definitely bumps, though not as pronounced as on yours, and they are white/yellowish with a red center.

@Ursula I apologize for inserting my aloe in your ID thread but you might have a Carol and another variety #1. Lovey dubby Yours look well taken care of.

Mine is a 10 year old neglected one but started taking good care of it last year. I will keep more babies this time too but it is my most requested aloe. Plus it stayed small, which is a plus. My friends are surprised to know that Aloes can live that long. Lovey dubby

Gave some to a colleague in october, all of his caught, and are now doing quite well.
But yeah, I let mine grow into quite the nice clumps(always wanted clumping red aloes)

I searched for Aloe Donnie in the world of succulents and surprised to see my photo shown there. Is that website tied to NGA? I've noticed a few garden.org photos there.
