Getting ready to bloom, scapes are a feature:)

Hemerocallis 'Crooked' 23W29 Daylily D3- (Murphy, 2005) Tall orange Daylily , Mature plant size: 59in., Golden orange, with red eye. , USDA Hardiness Zone 3, Michigan Bloom Month 7a, In Garden Bed D3 for 22 MONTHS (Murphy). Planted in 2021.

Murphy, 05 - 59" La 6" dor.dip. Reblooms. Every scape is crooked or loops. Golden orange, with red eye. Doubles about 30% to 50% of the time, with good conditions.

Completely distinctive, with 59" scapes, every one with a crook, bend, or even loop. You read that correctly. Nothing like it in your garden! Late bloom and good color, with green throat, complete the package. Scapes do lean, and twist, and some fall, but then grow toward the sun, with 15 buds, and 2 branches. Fertile, parents unknown. Exhibition Judges don't know what to do when this is on the show table.

2022 note: Scapes are crooked. However, some are laid out on the ground. Maybe this will improve as the plant matures.

So I was thinking the other day, wonder if Frank will start a tall daylily thread this year.

As Jackie Gleason would say: "And Awaaay We Go! "

This year, in my Bucks County, PA garden, many of my talls are averaging a few inches shorter than last year. Somewhat surprising, as we've had much more rain this season, especially June and July. Autumn Minaret is my tallest right now; haven't yet measured.

Photo below:

Extreme front left, buds only, 'Sears Tower' at 58 inches.
'Sears Tower' (Goldner, 2000), registered scape height 72 in, (183 cm)

Foreground right, 'Red Hill, at 52 inches.
'Red Hill' (Reed, 2004) registered scape height 42 in, (107 cm)

I have several clumps of 'Red Hill'. They never grow below 50 inches here.
Starts the day a true bright red, somewhere between Ferrari and Corvette red.
Need to catch it early, though, not very sunfast. Looks fantastic all day on cloudy days.

Center background
'Heavenly United We Stand' at 54 inches
'Heavenly United We Stand' (Gossard, 2009) registered scape height 51 in, (130 cm)

Heavenly is having a great year. Last year, impatient from waiting for this slow grower to reach its potential (slow increase here), I bought a huge clump from Mary Burgents at Morningstar Daylilies in NJ. The wait is over.

To the right of Heavenly, 'Bermuda Coral' at 51 inches.
'Bermuda Coral' (Marvin, 1986) registered scape height 45 in, (114 cm)
Another daylily that takes a while to reach it potential. Gets better every year in my garden.

Far left is Lilium 'Miss Feya' at approx. seven feet.

Thank you Frank.

Lots Gap appears to be selling it, over on Plantfans: https://lotsgapmountain.plantf...

I have 5 clumps. Tomorrow, I'll take some measurements and photos and post. What first struck me was the shade of red, almost a scarlet, but I don't see orange, just something very close to a bright red. When I saw it, I thought, "a daylily that has the color of a corvette, torch red." The only drawback is it can lose it's luster fairly quickly on hot, sunny days, but in the early morning, and on cloudy days, it pops. I tried to plant mine where it gets some morning shade.

Hello Frank, here are photos of four plants of Red Hill

Same plant posted yesterday, now with Sears Tower in bloom.
This gets full sun from around 10 till sunset:

Thumb of 2023-07-25/LivinEZ/a79e81

One at 54 inches; this gets the most sun, starting about 9 until sunset:

Thumb of 2023-07-25/LivinEZ/6a2fe6

One at 51 inches; this gets full sun starting around 10, then in shade after 3-4PM.
Also in the photo, a 'South Seas' at 47 inches!
'South Seas' (Moldovan, 1993) registered scape height 30 in, (76 cm)
So much for registered heights. Perhaps it's what I feed them. I give them a dose of Plantone once a year in early May:

Thumb of 2023-07-25/LivinEZ/99ad8c

Last, the mother plant at 52 inches. Purchased this from Woodhenge several years ago.
This gets sun from around 11 until sunset:

Thumb of 2023-07-25/LivinEZ/630a65

The last clump I have (#5) needs to be moved. It's now in too much shade, as a dawn redwood has expanded and shades it for most of the day. Not worth photographing. I'll dig this one and add it to one of the others.
I think photo #2 gives the best idea as to what my eye sees when in the garden.

I have Foxy Loxy. Like the flower. Moving it to a location with more sun, to see if the scapes get stronger, because they've been leaning too much.

This is a seedling that I started in 2019, a Wolverine x Heavenly New Frontiers cross. It is extra large this year due to flooding in Vermont, and is about 66" tall at the top of the buds. Or maybe taller. It was the first seedling to ever bloom out of about 1000 planted, and is a large and vigorous plant. So maybe the tall ones really are special!

Per Woodhenge Gardens Daylilies: (Murphy, 2012) 52" EMRe 8" Dormant Diploid UF Cascade Extended. A very tall, large cream Cascade with purple band, chartreuse throat, and cream midrib. This very imposing plant is in bloom for 3 months with moderate bud building and instant rebloom. Sunfast at 101F at 7 p.m. Rain resistant. Three branches, 22 buds initially, more after bud building. I feel that this one is worthy of awards and would like to get it distributed, so I dropped the price to make it more affordable. 2017- Bloomed from June 22 until October 26. Parentage: MONACAN TRAIL x JUST JESSIE. Fertile.

About 1 foot tall after a year in the ground. Much taller in second year (2020): 3 feet tall with an attractive 8" bloom. Hopefully it will reach 5 feet next year. Scapes look sturdy and measure 0.25 inches in diameter. Total of 5 scapes so far this year.

Frank, I think you will like 'Running Late'. It is one of the latest blooming in my garden and even though the blooms are not showy, I think they are very distinct with the stippling and because the sepals are darker than the petals. I don't believe mine has reached the 49" height as registered, but it is having to fight with the roots of the maple tree that sits just 15 feet away from it.

Gossard: My favorite overall introduction of all my introductions. Nicknamed "BEST RED" in the garden. HEAVENLY UNITED WE STAND has 9" sun fast blood red flowers with a nice green throat. It has the total package, excellent color, bud count, branching, cold hardy genes, large flower size, height, blue green foliage, Bud builder, dormancy, and super plant habit. Not a single trait that needs improved on except maybe a flower size of 14". This is best daylily I have introduced. It grows super good in zones 3 to 10. It remains blooming when few or if any dayliles are in bloom. It blooms into mid Sept for me, it will set pods, but only on last two blooms. I have seen blooms go to Oct 4th. Has 2015 stout metal winner , Websters Pink Wonder as one of parents. Won the 2017 STOUT SILVER MEDAL WINNER, highest award possible in daylilies.

2020 notes: Planted 3 years ago. 4 feet tall, scapes are 0.33 inches in diameter. Flowers are 8 inches across. Very strong grower.

Reds pop in the morning. Some L's and VL's, August 21 photos, and heights in my garden:

'Seventh Inning Stretch' (Sobek, 2005)
First bloom August 1. Hasn't yet peaked. Bud builder. Should bloom until October here. 51 inches today. Great VL red. Not particularly sunfast. Beautiful bright true red in the morning. The New England sellers carry this. Got mine from Tranquil Lake. Just ordered two more.
The rose behind it is 'Showbiz'. This rose SCREAMS red.

'Heavenly United We Stand' Needs no introduction. Jamie Gossard says it all, above.
Having a standout year in my garden. Got tired of waiting for my small clump to get big, so last year bought a 20 or so fan clump from Mary Burgents, at Morningstar Daylilies. The wait is over. 55 inches today.

Thumb of 2023-08-22/LivinEZ/20bff4

'Red Hill' (Reed, 2004) registered scape height 42 in, (107 cm)
My garden: 52 inches. Posted photo of this plant on this thread July 24. Good bud building this year. Might reach Sept 1. Not very sunfast. Great color early in the day. This always reaches 50 inches for me.

Thumb of 2023-08-22/LivinEZ/4d5ef1

'Fred's Red' (Murphy-J.P., 2012) Registered at 40 inches. In my garden, today, 58 inches, but I have to hold the scapes upright. Probably about 50 otherwise. Bit of a leaner, but makes a nice fountain effect. Deep true red. Holds color well in the sun. Bud builder. Not sure if it will make Sept.
