My brugs were not up against the house like the plumeria, and their pots were too rain-heavy to move. I took cuttings on Monday, in case we were hit by frost. I have branches in a vase at the back of the kitchen island, blooms and all! I'll make additional cuts once the blooms are done. I have another vase filled with 'Maya' cuttings, with their variegated leaves. Sally (Donner) tells me I should be rooting just the lower stems, without leaves, but I'm curious about what will happen, so I think I'll try both.

Someone (purpleinopp?) keeps whole Brug branches in milk jugs or similar. Blinking mine - brugs of any size indoors- always struggle with spider mites.
Plant it and they will come.

Years ago, I tried overwintering brugs in their containers, in the basement, and yes -- spider mites. If you don't catch them on day 1 or 2, you can forget it.

Sally (D) says she stores her cuttings until January, then roots them in water and begins up-potting them. She gives them larger containers frequently, so when they are ready to go outside, they are already in a 12-16" container. That's why hers bloom early and often!

Ah, good reminder!

Last year a Dr Seuss went pretty bare in its pot in the basement, but stayed live looking, and revived.
Other years, my Maya went all dry and hollow, and I can't remember if the roots resprouted. They can do some crazy things.

It looks like this weekend is probably our last chance to save anything tender.
Plant it and they will come.

My pride and joy!

There are a LOT of blooms that should open this weekend with the warm temps.

Now comes the hard part. I want to try to over winter this monster. Each arm of the lower fork has at least one more fork up higher. My though was to cut of the main fork and then cut off the smaller forks higher up.

The main trunk has all kinds of side shoots developing. Will they amount to anything? I'm thinking of bring the whole beast, after trimming into the basement for the winter. It's a pretty reliable low 60s all winter.

Once I cut the forks, how do I over winter them?

I'm not going to try storing any cuttings for later rooting, I'm just putting my cuttings into water now. I think some people keep rooted cuttings on their windowsill most of the winter. Sally (D) recommended that I keep the two fat "trunk" cuttings. I'm going to keep some of the smaller pieces also (they still have leaves and some have blooms, because I panicked and cut them on Monday). I'm using large (2-3 quart) containers and setting them on a heat mat, but I doubt they need the bottom heat. FWIW, the blooms are opening just fine on the cut branches.

When you get up this way, you'll have to snag a couple of cuttings from the potted brug you gave me this spring. You thought it was pink, maybe?, but it was a soft lemon yellow with a bit of citrus in its sweet scent.

Hmmm Confused - I'm thought I gave you Shirley Temple unless I mixed up the two big pots. Did she have a tag?

No tag, and it's definitely lemon yellow. I've got 5 cuttings in a gallon glass jar (formerly a betta bowl) and the same number of 'Maya' cuttings. Both sets are starting to get those white bumps that mean there will be roots soon. I plan to leave them in water until Jan/Feb, and then I'll find a light shelf for them in the basement. I should have some of each available at the seed swap.

I pulled the Brugs into the garage and took a look the other big one and thinking now that I may have grabbed the wrong one to give to you so you either have Charles Grimmel or Dr. Seuss. And yes, I would love a cutting. I'll put your name on the Shirley Temple if you would like her.

Can anyone tell me what variety mine is? The tag only said yellow, which is little value. I didn't care when I bought it, but now that has trived and bloomed, I'd kind of like to know.

Yes, please to cuttings...I think I'll take some from Shirley T and then she's yours. I actually bought the cuttings directly from Fred Sommer, the Hybridizer years back.

I don't want all of Shirley T, please, just a cutting! Neat to know your plant came right from the hybridizer.

Chantell said my yellow brug might also be Dr. Seuss, and the description does seem to match (including a lemon-citrus note in its scent). But there was another she thought was a possibility, Charles something, which seems to be a descendent of Dr. Suess. I think I'll go with 'Dr. Suess', just because I'm a fan.
